Owner Hugh Leong Poi had his biggest day in his life as an owner as on Saturday when he recorded three winners on the seven-race card at Santa Rosa Park in Arima. Bringing him success were Lady Bird Wang Chung and feature winner Super Bird, respectively.
The veteran owner who has been around for some 50 years had his first major success when he was the co-owner of the legendary Top of The Class which was Triple Crown winner of 2003. This horse was co-owned by Merlin Samlalsingh and trained by Glenn Mendez.
Leong Poi's horses were all trained by champion trainer John O'Brien who had another brilliant day, saddling four winners on Day 21 of the Arima Race Club's (ARC) racing season.
Leong Poi's winning treble began in in the second event when Lady Bird destroyed her field, with Keishan Balgobin doing the steering.
Leong Poi was back in the winner's circle in the fourth event when Wang Chung won by 2 3/4 length for champion jockey Brian Boodramsing.
The best was yet to come for Leong Poi and in the fifth event on the programme, a champion appeared in the form of two-year-old Super Bird who dominated his rivals from beginning to end under former champion jockey Ronald Ali in the Grade Two - feature St James and St Ann's Stakes over 1,350 metres on the main track.
In the main event, which was open to West Indies two-year-old colts, gelding and fillies, Super Bird looked to be in a different league to his rivals as he drew off impressively in the final 200m to win as the "Juvenile Champion" of T&T.
Day 21 of the ARC racing season belonged to owner Hugh Leong Poi.
