T&T's medal prospect at the upcoming Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile just got more difficult following the withdrawal of professional cyclist Teniel Campbell.
The 2019 Pan Am Games double silver medallist was one of six local cyclists named in the 64-member contingent to Chile.
However, in a post on her Facebook page on Monday, Campbell announced she has "been struggling with a prolonged illness (after) post the Italian races a few weeks ago. Unfortunately due to this decision, I was made to withdraw from the competition."
The 26-year-old added: "I was really looking forward to competing in the red, white and black at the upcoming Pan American Games in Santiago Chile."
At the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru, the Debe High graduate won silver medals in the Road Race in 24:50.20 and missed out on gold by one second in the Time Trials three days later, crossing the time 2:18.50. Campbell's medals were the first by a local female at the hemispheric meet.
President of the T&T Cycling Federation Rowena Williams, when contacted by Guardian Media, confirmed Campbell's withdrawal and added she is saddened by the news.
She said: "Teniel's health is more important than her racing."
T&T's cycling medal hopes now rest on the pedals of world record-holder Nicholas Paul, who is the defending Match Sprint champion. Campbell's brother Akil, Kwesi Browne, Alexi Costa-Ramirez and Zion Pulido are the other national cyclists heading to Santiago.
