Champion trainer John O’Brien continued his unbelievable form, when he saddled three of the six winners on the Arima Race Club’s (ARC) day six programme.
O’Brien who has been the champion trainer for nearly a decade and has saddled two ‘Triple Crown’ winners showed his muscle on Tuesday at Santa Rosa Park, Arima when he not only landed three winners but won the feature event on the day, the Ms Indeera Deokiesingh Guineas - the first leg of local racing’s ‘Triple crown’.
The race lost much of its meaning when the 9-5 second favourite Firecracker was withdrawn from the event just as the race was about to be sent off. This was disappointing for turfites, race fans and the betting public.
The top conditioner had three horses in the feature the 1-2 favourite, In The Headlines, Blinding Lights (6-1) and Angry Bird (5-1). Following these in the betting were Harts Gap (19-1), Theory of Colours and Afridi (50-1) and Beep Beep which was backed at 60-1 in the seven-horse field.
When the starter sent the field on their way, Angry Bird was the first to show from Harts Gap with the heavily backed favourite In The Headlines tracking. These were followed by Blinding Lights, Beep, Theory of Colours and the trailing Afridi.
Going up the back-stretch, Harts Gap held a two-length lead from In The Headlines who was allowed to move closer to the pace, these were followed by Blinding Lights and Angry Bird. Beep Beep followed a length behind with Theory of Colours being ridden along to keep pace as Afridi accepted his position at the rear.
Coming to the far turn, Harts Gap still led but his lead was only on sufferance as Tristan Phillips allowed the Ladies Stable star In the Headlines to challenge and she took over immediately and shot into a two-length lead from Harts Gap as Blinding Lights began his run at the leader with Angry Bird covering his every move. It was here that Theory of Colours began to close on the leaders and looked likely to be in the finish of the Grade One event under ‘Hall of Famer’ Ricky Jadoo.
As the horses swung for home, In The Headlines had the race all sewn up as she drew seven lengths clear of Blinding Lights, Angry Bird and Harts Gap as Theory of Colours showed a fine turn of foot to begin his run on the outside of the field.
But that did not matter as In The Headlines simply ran away from his rivals in the style of a very good horse while giving Phillips his first Guineas and Grade One winner. Theory of Colours showed a good turn of foot to outrun the other O’Brien-trained horse to snatch second with Blinding Lights staying on for third and Angry Bird in fourth on the sloppy main track.
It was all girl power as the only male in the field was Afridi which finished a distant last.
The winner’s time was 1:56.00 for the 1,800 metres.
Nobel Abrego just as he did in the Derby put up a kilo over-weight and won aboard the 8-5 favourite Soca Harmony who he put to sleep before bringing her alive at the 500m marker to outrun the 2022 Gold Cup winner, Crown Prince, the 2022 Stewards Cup runner-up Top of The Class which travelled like a winner until the winner pounced in the final 200m on the 1,350m event. The race was supposed to be run on the turf over 1,500m but all events on the turf track were taken off the grass and put on the main track.
Going down the backstretch, Marvel Vigor held sway from New Flash as Top Of The Game and Crown Prince got closer on the inside with Soca Harmony in no hurry.
With 500m left to race Marvel Vigor was being challenged by Top of The Game with Crown Prince on the inside as News Flash cried enough. It was here that Abrego asked Soca Harmony for her effort.
Just as Crown Prince looked to have gotten the better of Top of The Game, here came Abrego and Soca Harmony to sweep by them both for an impressive success. The 2022 Derby winner set up another one-two for trainer O’Brien as Crown Prince finished second and Top of The Game, third.
The winner’s time was 1:22.00.
O’Brien winning began with Soca Harmony in the fourth event, which was followed by In The Headlines in the fifth and in the final event, Happy Bird flew to an impressive success.
The day’s leading rider was Phillips who rode two winners – In The Headlines and Happy Bird for trainer O’Brien.
