T&T Red Force wick­et­keep­er-bats­man Amir Jan­goo has been in­clud­ed in the West In­dies Test squad to trav­el to Pak­istan for the two-match Test se­ries in Jan­u­ary.

The 27-year-old be­came the first West In­dies bats­man since Desmond Haynes in 1978 to score a cen­tu­ry on de­but when he scored 104 not out as West In­dies beat Bangladesh by four wick­ets at Warn­er Park, Bas­seterre, St Kitts last Thurs­day to win the three-match One Day In­ter­na­tion­al (ODI) se­ries three-nil.

While the West In­dies Test team has not yet been an­nounced, Guardian Me­dia Sport was re­li­ably in­formed he will be in the squad in Pak­istan for the two-match Test se­ries.

T&T head coach David Fur­longe, speak­ing on Red Force's prepa­ra­tions for the West In­dies Cham­pi­onships to be­gin next month named Jan­goo among four play­ers who will not be avail­able be­cause of West In­dies du­ty.

“We will be start­ing off the sea­son sort of on the back foot,” Fur­longe said. “We will not have the ser­vices of Joshua Da Sil­va, Jay­den Seales, Amir Jan­goo and An­der­son Phillip."

The un­avail­abil­i­ty of the four play­ers means that young play­ers will have op­por­tu­ni­ties to press for places in the na­tion­al team.

On day one of the Tri­al match at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair, Port-of-Spain, yes­ter­day, na­tion­al Un­der-20 play­ers were present and tak­ing part in the fix­ture, in­clud­ing Aa­di­an Racha, Joshua Davis, Ja­cen Agard and Fa­reez Ali.

“There are some of the play­ers from the U-19 team, some of the U-23 play­ers and I'm giv­ing them some ex­pe­ri­ence, train­ing with the se­nior guys," said Fur­longe.

In ad­di­tion to the Pak­istan tour at the start of the sea­son, the Red Force will be with­out pac­ers Seales (Sus­sex) and Phillip (Lan­cashire) for the last rounds of the cham­pi­onships. The two fast bowlers will be head­ing to Eng­land to ful­fil oblig­a­tions in the Eng­lish Coun­ty Cham­pi­onship.

“We see the dif­fer­ence it made in Jay­den with his de­vel­op­ment since he has come back from that stint,” said the na­tion­al head coach.

With the fast bowl­ing duo leav­ing a void in T&T’s pace ar­tillery, the coach­ing staff will be look­ing to­wards the younger pac­ers to fill the vac­u­um.

“You have Ab­dul-Ra­heem Top­pin, you have Shaaron Lewis who has been knock­ing on the door for a long time, you have Justin Man­nick who played one game for T&T. We al­so have Philton Williams who has played for T&T al­ready and he has been re­called now, as we looked at his per­for­mances in club crick­et,” said Fur­longe

The Red Force play­ers will be aim­ing to wrest their hands on the First Class tro­phy, some­thing they have not done since 2006.

“We want to try to put our best ef­fort to win the four days this year,” Fur­longe ex­plains. “We have a lot of dis­cus­sions and what we want to do. We have in­creased train­ing from 9 am to 1 pm, to 9 am to 3 pm. We are go­ing to in­crease it more.”

Fur­longe is de­ter­mined to end the decade-long dom­i­na­tion of Guyana and Bar­ba­dos. Since 2012, on­ly Guyana (6) and Bar­ba­dos (4) have won the West In­dies First Class tour­na­ment.

“When we start back, ba­si­cal­ly we will be train­ing the whole day and train­ing five days a week. If we re­al­ly want to win the tour­na­ment, we re­al­ly have to put in an ex­tra ef­fort,” said Fur­longe.
