The Trinidad and Tobago Red Force duo of Amir Jangoo and Bryan Charles led Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) to an innings and 236 runs win over Prisons in Arouca on Sunday.
The win enabled the Tragarete Road outfit to leapfrog Marchin Patriots, which drew against leaders Powergen, with the Penal outfit getting a first-innings lead in Charlieville.
The Parkites started the weekend in third place, bowling Prisons out for 61 on Saturday with off-spinner Bryan Charles claiming 5 for 18 as he led the demolition of the home team in Arouca. Zackurrie Raghoonath was the only Prison batsman to provide meaningful resistance, battling for 26 and keeping the Parkites’ onslaught at bay for 77 balls.
In their turn at the crease, Queen’s Park was led by Amir Jangoo, who smashed an unbeaten 134 from 177 balls. The left-handed West Indies top-order batsman slammed eight fours in his knock and shared important partnerships with captain Joshua Da Silva (58) in a partnership worth 89 runs and Tion Webster (43) in a partnership worth 87 runs that propelled the Port-of-Spain team to 400 for 7 before the declaration came.
With a healthy lead of 339 runs, Queen’s Park was determined to pick up important points, looking ahead to Round Seven, when they play Bess Motors Marchin Patriots.
Zackurrie Raghoonath was again a repellent to the Queen’s Park bowlers with 33 not out. He got support this time from Sidel Diaz, who in his usual style did not spare the rod, hitting 35 from 37 balls with three fours and three sixes.
Charles just missed his ten-wicket haul, taking four for 31, while Barbadian all-rounder Kadeem Alleyne took four for 23 as Prisons were bowled out for 103, still 236 runs behind to give up the huge loss.
Meanwhile, at Marchin, T&T and West Indies top-order batsman Evin Lewis responded to Jason Mohammed and Navin Bidaisee century batting performances with a century of his own, 113 for Marchin Patriots in their reply to Powergen’s 403/7 declared in their drawn match.
The West Indies white-ball opener slammed 113 from 132 balls. The explosive left-handed attacking batsman slammed nine fours and nine maximums, but he didn’t have much support from the rest of the team, as they were bowled out for a disappointing 196 in 47.4 overs.
Only Kirstan Kallicharan’s 22 and Crystian Thurton’s 13 were the only other scores that passed ten.
Off-spinner Avinash Mahabirsingh was the pick of the Powergen bowlers, who tormented the Marchin batsmen with figures of five for 33, while Guyanese spinner Ashmead Nedd grabbed three for 56.
Following on at home, Marchin Patriots got an unbeaten 76 from former Central Sports batsman Kamil Pooran, who hit seven fours and six sixes from just 47 balls as Patriots closed on 99 for two from 13 overs.
