The second season of Keshorn Walcott’s Golden League Athletics series is set to begin on January 4 at the Eddie Hart Ground in Tacarigua, offering valuable competitive opportunities for athletes ranging from the Under-9 to Senior levels.
Designed to cater to a “wide developmental range,” the series will see athletes in the U-9, U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17, U-20, and Open divisions compete for points in a league format. Across the first four meets, participants will vie for a spot in the Golden League Finale, which features only the top eight performers in each event.
The five-venue track and field series begins with the first of four qualifying meets at the Eddie Hart Ground then to Shaw Park in Tobago on January 18 and, Toco Secondary Ground at Walcott’s alma-mater on January 31.
In February, the fourth meet will engage athletes at the Mahaica Sporting Complex in Point Fortin before culminating in the National Finale at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex, on Savannah Road on March 14.
In last year’s finale, Shian Lewis of the One-a-Week multi-sport club, a Carifta Games bronze medalist, delivered a standout performance, winning three gold medals in the girls' U-17 400m, 800m, and 1,500m events.
Launched in November 2024, the league represents the Olympic and World champion’s commitment to filling local competitive gaps. By providing a structured platform, Walcott aims to help athletes prepare for higher levels of international competition. Notably, Walcott was named a Sport Ambassador in September following his historic gold medal win at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships.
Described as a “launching pad” for the next generation of national athletes, according to a release the series is “continuing its mission to provide a structured, high-quality platform for athletes to develop, compete, and grow at the grassroots level.”
Organisers say the Golden League is meant to strengthen the national athletics pipeline while reinforcing the importance of sport at the grassroots level.
Each meet is free to the public and community and school groups are encouraged to show up for their athletes.
This year’s edition is supported by the T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC), bmobile, KW Rehab Centre, Dasani, Powerade and the Massy Foundation.
