Akeal Hosein undermined Guyana Amazon Warriors with the ball and Alex Hales and Colin Munro dominated with the bat as the Trinbago Knight Riders registered a six-wicket victory, their fourth in succession, in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League on Saturday.
Player-of-the-Match Hosein claimed 3-27 from his four overs and was a major reason why the Amazon Warriors only got up to 163 for nine in their 20 overs after being sent in to bat at the Brian Lara Stadium.
Hales and Munro then both scored pulsating half centuries during an opening stand of 116 while scoring at more than 10 runs an over, to see the home side gallop to 169 for four off just 17.2 overs.
Chasing a below par total, the two openers wasted little time with Munro hitting spinner Gudakesh Motie for three fours and a six in his opening over and second of the innings.
Hales then outdid his batting partner by launching Moeen Ali for three straight sixes and a four to start the next over that leaked 23 overs, as the Knight Riders rocketed to 49 without loss after only three overs.
Pacer Shamar Joseph was introduced to the attack, but he too was dispatched by Munro for a six and four and skipper Imran Tahir was belted for back-to-back sixes in the seventh over by Hales, which ended with the Knight Riders 90 without loss.
Munro, who also scored a half century in his previous match, was first to his 50 off 26 balls by slog sweeping Tahir for two runs, and Hales followed suit four balls later, bringing up his milestone off 26 balls with another massive six off Tahir that sailed over the boundary ropes.
So devastating was their opening stand that even when Tahir grabbed three wickets in one over, the result never seemed in doubt.
Tahir had Munro caught at extra cover for 52 off 30 balls with six fours and three sixes, had Nicholas Pooran caught first ball at long off and then bowled Keacy Carty, also for a duck, to see the home side stumble to 117 for three after 11 overs.
Tahir also accounted for Hales’ wicket for a well-played 74 off 43 balls, inclusive of seven sixes and three fours, but Andre Russell and Kieron Pollard held firm to see their side to victory.
Tahir ended with 4-37 from his four overs.
Earlier, Hosein and Terrance Hinds, who took 2-35, shackled the Amazon Warriors’ high powered batting lineup.
Hosein accounted for opener Ben McDermott, Hassan Khan and Shimron Hetmyer, as the Amazon Warriors’ top order faltered apart from Shai Hope, who hit a fighting 39 off 29 balls.
The Amazon Warriors lost wickets regularly and found themselves 70 for five at the end of nine overs, before Quentin Sampson (25,), Dwaine Pretorius (21) and Romario Shepherd (19), bolstered their total. (CMC)
