Samantha Olton and Shaniah De Freitas scored two goals each to lead Magnolias to an emphatic 7-2 defeat of Paragon in the Women’s Open Division knockout final of the T&T Hockey Board Indoor Championship to complete the league and knockout double at the Woodbrook Youth Facility in Port-of-Spain on Sunday.
De Freitas opened the scoring in the first minute of play while Olton made it 2-0 in the sixth minute followed by their team's third item in the tenth minute by Brianna Govia before Gabrielle Thompson pulled a goal back for Paragon in the 13th minute to trail 3-1.
Shaniah and her sibling Savannah De Freitas then netted in quick succession in the 22nd and 23rd, respectively, to put Magnolias 5-1 ahead only for Paragon to get a goal back through Keima Gardiner in the 26th.
However, any hopes of a late fightback from Paragon were quickly put to rest with Olton scoring her second of the match and the team's sixth to cap a 6-2 triumph.
Earlier in the semifinals, Magnolias crushed Harvard Checkers 9-0 led by hattricks from Shaniah and Govia while Paragon blanked Police 5-0 powered by a brace from Naomi Sampson.
The men's knockout final was a much closer fought contest with Paragon holding off Defence Force 5-4 thanks to a late double from Tarell Singh.
The army/coast-guard combination came out firing and went ahead in the first minute through Dylan Francis only for Paragon to hit back with goals from Joel Daniel (9th), Kiel Murray (16th), and David Coker (19th) for the latter to lead 3-1.
Defence Force managed to draw level at 3-3 after items from Che Modeste in the 25th, and Tariq Singh, a minute later.
However, Tarrell Singh, the brother of Tariq then banged in two goals for Paragon in the 35th and 36th for a 5-3 lead before Mickel Pierre netted in the 39th to reduce the margin, but in the end, Paragon managed to hang on for the win.
In the semifinals, Paragon got the better of league champions Queen's Park Cricket Club 1-0 on penalty strokes after both teams fought out an entertaining 6-6 draw while Defence Force also won on penalty strokes, 2-0 over Police after a 2-2 regulation-time score.
