Roger Mal­co rolled back the years at Sat­ur­day’s T&T Cy­cling Fed­er­a­tion’s Track Chal­lenge at the Na­tion­al Cy­cling Cen­tre (NCC) in Bal­main, Cou­va.

Con­test­ing the Mas­ters’ 50-59 age brack­et, Mal­co, who reg­u­lar­ly keeps him­self fit on the bike, stormed away with four gold medals, the most to be won by any oth­er rid­er on the day.

He first pro­duced a time of 12.877 sec­onds in the fly­ing 200-me­tre sprint rep­re­sent­ing the Raiders Cy­cle Club, and lat­er Mal­co mount­ed the podi­um for a sec­ond time in the Scratch Race, which went for five laps of the fa­cil­i­ty; still, he was far from fin­ish­ing.

Mal­co, whose ex­ploits on the cy­cling track many years ago were re­liv­ed at the NCC at the week­end, al­so claimed his third gold medal and ti­tle in the Scratch Race that went over eight laps. He got to the fin­ish line ahead of Mar­lon Joseph of Team DPS, set­tling for the run­ner-up spot.

Mal­co then clinched the win in the much-fan­cied men’s keirin event for mas­ters’ 50-plus, 60-plus and 70-plus rid­ers. Mal­co’s clos­est ri­val had been Cyril Fook, who won all the events he took part in on the day.

But in a race that com­bined all the mas­ters’ rid­ers, Fook was forced to make way for Mal­co, clinch­ing the win, while Joel Browne se­cured the third-place fin­ish for Ari­ma Wheel­ers.

Mean­while, Meli­na Lopez was a dou­ble-crown win­ner in the Tinymites fe­male cat­e­go­ry.

The Valkyries rid­er sprint­ed to vic­to­ry in the 200-me­tre time tri­al and lat­er held off Kylee Young of the Madon­na Wheel­ers for the keirin ti­tle. Cheyen­na Awai, the Heat­wave rid­er, se­cured the third-place fin­ish.
