T&T’s Teague Marcano scored a pair of goals, and former national captain Kwandwane Browne one as Southgate Hockey Club thumped Brighton & Hove 7-1 when the second half of the English Hockey League Division One South Outdoor season resumed last weekend.
The 22-year-old Marcano scored the opening before Browne converted a penalty followed by a strike from Si Walker to extend the advantage to 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Drew Burkin then scored a close-range tap-in for Southgate in the second quarter to push the lead to 4-0 at the half-time interval before Marcano completed his double early in the third period to carry his league tally to 16 goals, while Charles Hamilton added to Southgate’s tally with the sixth item to end the third period.
The final quarter saw Southgate step off the gas with Burkin the lone score to complete his double as well before Brighton & Hove got a late consolation.
The win was the tenth from as many matches for Southgate to improve to a maximum of 30 points, eight ahead of Canterbury, while Teddington, who Southgate faces next on Saturday (February 11), sits third with 21 points followed by Team Bath Buccaneers with 20, and Old Loughtonians with to round out the top five on the ten-club table.
Two weeks ago, Marcano scored a tournament-leading 30 goals, 19 in the divisional round playoffs to lead Southgate Hockey Club to one of the two promotion spots when the six-club England Hockey League Adult Super 6s Indoor Championships Men’s National Division Two concluded at Repton School, Derby, England, on Sunday.
Under the supervision of player/coach, Browne, who featured for T&T in more than 400 international matches, Southgate ended the National Division Two Championship with a 4-1 win-loss record and 12 points, the same as Beeston who finished top of the table with a superior goal-difference of plus-27 to Southgate’s plus-20, while Bowdon ended third with nine points from a 3-2 record.
Earlier in the month during the first phase of the competition, in the Men’s Division Two South round-robin series, Marcano’s 19 goals included four beaver-tricks to lead Southgate to the top spot with a maximum of 15 points, five more than fellow qualifiers Guilford, and the University of Bristol.
