T&T international hockey player Teague Marcano scored a joint league-best 19 goals with Tom Minall of the University of Bristol, inclusive of four beaver-trick to lead Southgate Hockey Club to the top spot in the England Hockey League Adult Super 6s Indoor Championships Men's Division Two at the University of the West of England, last weekend.
Playing in the six-club Men's Division Two South round-robin series, Marcano scored a beaver trick in Southgate's opening 14-2 mauling of Trojans on Saturday, followed by another four-goal display in his team's 10-5 defeat of his former club, St Albans to end Saturday with a perfect 2-0 record.
Marcano, who has also netted a league-best 14 goals to lead Southgate to a perfect 9-0 record and 27 points at the halfway stage of the English Hockey League Division One South Outdoor competition, picked up where he left off on Saturday by scoring a beaver trick, his third in as many matches as Southgate with former T&T international Kwandwane Browne serving as player/coach also on target as they battled past the University of Bristol 7-5.
He then netted a hattrick in a 9-4 defeat of Guilford before ending off his tournament, with his fourth beaver trick in their 11-3 trashing of Fareham for a perfect 5-0 record and 15 points, five clear of fellow qualifiers to the Division Two National playoffs, Guildford, and the University of Bristol.
Overall, Marcano's 19 goals included ten field goals, six penalty corners, and three penalty strokes with the next best contributor for Southgate being club captain John Sterlini with 11 and Charles Hamilton with nine.
The trio of Southgate, Guildford and the University of Bristol will be joined by the top three clubs in the Men's Division Two North six-team round-robin series for the National Division Two division, where those games will be played on January, 21 and 22.
Commenting on his performances last weekend, the 22-year-old Marcano said it was pleasing to see that he and his teammates were able to carry their winning momentum from their Outdoor season into the Indoor competition.
He added, "It's basically the same team and group of players we are using in the Indoor that have played so far in the Outdoor season and we are not really a specialised Indoor team, so for us to have those results were encouraging."
During the first part of the England Hockey League Division One South season, Southgate managed to win all nine of their matches to lead the ten-club table with a maximum of 27 points, and Marcano who is also the leading scorer for the club in the Outdoor competition with 14 goals, said the team is using the Indoor tournament to help sharpen their game ahead of the resumption of the Outdoor campaign.
"The Outdoor season resumes the first weekend in February, and while we are happy to get the wins and contest for a chance at promotion, we are always mindful that these matches also provide the chance for us to improve our skills set ahead."
Looking ahead to the six-team Indoor National Division Two Indoor competition from which the top two teams will gain promotion to Division One, Marcano said he was confident of Southgate finishing amongst the qualifiers.
"It's just for us to continue the great work we have been doing as a team, playing solid hockey, taking our scoring chances, and limiting the opposition to as few opportunities as possible," ended Marcano.
