Matthew leaps to boys' U-17 long jump gold

Im­mani Matthew leaped to a gold medal for T&T on day one of the Carif­ta Games in Nas­sau, Ba­hamas on Sat­ur­day.

T&T closed the first day in the 50th edi­tion of the pre­mier track and field meet, with six medals (1 gold, 2 sil­vers and two bronzes).

Matthew dom­i­nat­ed the boys' Un­der-17 long jump event, pro­duc­ing a 7.13m leap, to reach the top spot on the podi­um at the Thomas A Robin­son Sta­di­um in Nas­sau. He led from the first jump (7.13m) and could not be caught by his fel­low com­peti­tors.

Aaron Mas­si­ah of Bar­ba­dos got the sil­ver with 6.49m and Jr An­tho­ny Chin (Cay­man) bagged the bronze with 6.48m. T&T's oth­er jumper Ja­haziel David (T&T) fin­ished sev­enth with 6.13m

Do­ri­an Charles and Pey­ton Win­ter won T&T's first medals at Carif­ta50 in the morn­ing ses­sion on day one.

Charles copped sil­ver in the boys' Un­der-20 javelin event with a throw of 61.58m, The 18-year-old throw­er fin­ished be­hind Ba­hami­an Kaden Cartwright, who sent the spear 64.07m, and ahead of Cameron Thomas of Grena­da with 60.12m. An­oth­er T&T throw­er, Le Bron James placed fourth in the event with his best throw reach­ing 58.70m.

Win­ter al­so won the sil­ver medal in the girls' U-17 shot put event. The 15-year-old tossed the ob­ject 13.66m to place sec­ond be­hind Ja­maican Dion­jah Shaw with 14.48m and ahead of Ba­hami­an Ter­rell Mc­Coy with 13.31m.

Jai­di James picked up T&T's third medal in the boys' U-20 high jump. He bagged a bronze clear­ing the bar at 1.95m to place be­hind Ja­maican duo Bran­don Pot­tinger (2.00m) and Chavez Penn (2.00m), who shared the top spot on the podi­um.

Alexxe Hen­ry then fol­lowed up on the track with this coun­try's fourth medal. The 16-year-old sprint­er crossed third with 11.81 sec­onds to al­so seal a bronze medal in the girls' U-17 100m fi­nal. She fol­lowed to the line, Jami­ah Nab­bie of Ba­hamas (11.67) and St Lu­cian Nao­mi Lon­don (11.72).

Sym­pho­ny Patrick al­so faced the starter in the medal race but she placed eighth with a time of 12.21.

T&T's third bronze medal came thanks to Sanaa Fred­er­ick in the girls' U-20 100m dash.

The for­eign-based sprint­er crossed third with a time of 11.65 to fol­low the Ja­maica pair of Alana Reid (11.17) and Alex­is James (11.53), re­spec­tive­ly.

Fred­er­ick was the quick­est qual­i­fi­er in the pre­lim­i­nary heats, win­ning heat three with an 11.47 clock­ing and cruised to vic­to­ry in semi­fi­nal heat one with 11.52, pro­gress­ing with the sec­ond fastest time.

Reneisha An­drews, T&T's oth­er sprint­er, did not ad­vance to the medal af­ter fin­ish­ing fifth in heat two with 12.06. An­drews had pro­gressed as one of the fastest losers af­ter plac­ing third in heat two with 12.21 in the semi­fi­nals.

Across the field, Tenique Vin­cent just missed out on a podi­um fin­ish as she placed fourth in the girls' U-17 high jump. Vin­cent cleared the bar with 1.65m, to fin­ish be­hind Ja­maican Asia McK­ay (1.73m), Jah'ky­lah Mor­ton of the British Vir­gin Is­land (BVI) with 1.70m and Shan­ni­qua Williams al­so of Ja­maica (1.65m), re­spec­tive­ly.

Vin­cent, soon af­ter, switched her fo­cus to the com­pe­ti­tion in the girls' open hep­tathlon. At the end of the morn­ing ses­sion, the 15-year-old trailed T&T com­pa­tri­ot Gi­an­na Paul (17) by 125 points af­ter two dis­ci­plines. Paul fin­ished in sec­ond place in the open­ing event, the 100m hur­dles, with 14.78 to earn 871 points be­hind Ba­hamas' Essence Sands 14.73 (878). Vin­cent placed fifth with 15.47 (781).

Vin­cent then jumped to the run­ner-up spot af­ter fin­ish­ing sec­ond in the high jump dis­ci­pline, clear­ing the bar with 1.60m for 736 points. Paul led this event with a 1.63m ef­fort (771) to move in­to the top spot.

T&T ath­letes al­so led in the boys' open oc­tathlon af­ter two dis­ci­plines. Ki­mani Kent is on top with 1,478 points from, the 100m with 11.13 (832) and the long jump (6.27m) while team­mate Je­re­mi Fran­cis is sec­ond with 1,415, re­spec­tive­ly from the open­ing dis­ci­plines - 11.41 (771) and 6.26m (664).
