Jumpers Immani Matthews and Janae De Gannes and heptathlete Gianna Paul, gold medallists at the recent North America, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-18-U-23 Championships, will get to show off their leaping expertise in front of a home crowd when they represent T&T at the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG).
They were named on a 114-member team which comprises 74 athletes, 27 officials and 13 medical support staff to compete at Trinbago2023, which will be hosted on various venues on both islands from August 4-11.
Matthews and De Gannes, who topped the respective Under-18 boys' and girls' long jump events, and Paul, the girls' heptathlon winner, at NACAC last weekend in Costa Rica are part of the athletics team which features several other individual medallists in the U-18 category from that Games. They are Cheyne West and Keneisha Shelbourne, who copped silver medals in the boys' 400 metres hurdles and the girls' high jump, and Andrew Steele, the bronze medallists in the boys' long jump.
These track and field athletes will chase success at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain, one of three venues to be used in Trinidad for Trinbago2023. The others, the National Aquatic Centre and the National Cycling Velodrome are in Balmain, Couva.
Over on the sister isle, triathletes Jenae Allum Price, Liam D'Abadie and James Castagne-Hay will compete at the Buccoo Beach facility; the netball team, which is coached by Tobago native Kyla Keith, will tackle the Fast5 competition at the Shaw Park Cultural Complex with the rugby seven teams competing close by at the Shaw Park Recreation Ground; and beach volleyballers Jerome Morrison, Jahreef Miguel, L'Fe Roberts and Meeka Johnson will face off against the best youth teams in the Commonwealth at the Pigeon Point Beach Facility.
Some 1,000 athletes from 70 countries will visit T&T shores to participate in the seventh edition of the Games.
