Jumpers Im­mani Matthews and Janae De Gannes and hep­tath­lete Gi­an­na Paul, gold medal­lists at the re­cent North Amer­i­ca, Cen­tral Amer­i­can and Caribbean (NACAC) Un­der-18-U-23 Cham­pi­onships, will get to show off their leap­ing ex­per­tise in front of a home crowd when they rep­re­sent T&T at the Com­mon­wealth Youth Games (CYG).

They were named on a 114-mem­ber team which com­pris­es 74 ath­letes, 27 of­fi­cials and 13 med­ical sup­port staff to com­pete at Trin­ba­go2023, which will be host­ed on var­i­ous venues on both is­lands from Au­gust 4-11.

Matthews and De Gannes, who topped the re­spec­tive Un­der-18 boys' and girls' long jump events, and Paul, the girls' hep­tathlon win­ner, at NACAC last week­end in Cos­ta Ri­ca are part of the ath­let­ics team which fea­tures sev­er­al oth­er in­di­vid­ual medal­lists in the U-18 cat­e­go­ry from that Games. They are Cheyne West and Keneisha Shel­bourne, who copped sil­ver medals in the boys' 400 me­tres hur­dles and the girls' high jump, and An­drew Steele, the bronze medal­lists in the boys' long jump.

These track and field ath­letes will chase suc­cess at the Hase­ly Craw­ford Sta­di­um in Mu­cu­rapo, Port-of-Spain, one of three venues to be used in Trinidad for Trin­ba­go2023. The oth­ers, the Na­tion­al Aquat­ic Cen­tre and the Na­tion­al Cy­cling Velo­drome are in Bal­main, Cou­va.

Over on the sis­ter isle, triath­letes Je­nae Al­lum Price, Liam D'Abadie and James Castagne-Hay will com­pete at the Buc­coo Beach fa­cil­i­ty; the net­ball team, which is coached by To­ba­go na­tive Ky­la Kei­th, will tack­le the Fast5 com­pe­ti­tion at the Shaw Park Cul­tur­al Com­plex with the rug­by sev­en teams com­pet­ing close by at the Shaw Park Recre­ation Ground; and beach vol­ley­ballers Jerome Mor­ri­son, Jahreef Miguel, L'Fe Roberts and Mee­ka John­son will face off against the best youth teams in the Com­mon­wealth at the Pi­geon Point Beach Fa­cil­i­ty.

Some 1,000 ath­letes from 70 coun­tries will vis­it T&T shores to par­tic­i­pate in the sev­enth edi­tion of the Games.
