Mexico's Eder Frayre edged Jonathan Brown of the United States to win what proved a punishing final event, the 120 km Tour of Tobago, and with the victory secured the overall title of the Tobago International Cycling Classic which concluded Sunday in Scarborough, Tobago.
In sweltering and taxing conditions that saw just 19 of the 36 starters who started the race cross the finish line, the Legion of Los Angeles rider showed his liking for the hot and humid conditions by completing the gruelling course in a time of four hours, seven minutes, and 36.59 seconds (4:7.36.59) being closely followed home by Brown of Miami Blazers (4:7.37.33), with Colombian Mateo Castaneda of Raiders a distant third with a time of 4:14.48.30.
The Mexican had earlier won Friday’s 90-kilometre second stage of the event, put some icing on what would have been a wonderful weekend by besting a field of other leading international, regional and local riders in the Division One Elite category, through his consistency which saw him among the top six finishers as he accumulated 90 points over the four stages of the four-day Classic, 12 more that his nearest challenger.
USA's Sam Smith of Bike World p/b Fred Beans was fourth (4:14:49.03) and Barbadian Joshua Kelly of Miami Blazers completed the top five in 4:19:20.57, with the remainder of the top finishers being led by the USA's Gavin Hlady of Heatwave who was sixth in 4:21:37.25, clubmate Enrique De Comarmond - the first T&T rider to finish - seventh in a time of 4:21:37.58, just ahead of USA's Musum Brian of Team Pharmaco JLD (4:21:39.56).
Tobago-born former national road race champion, Emile Abraham, continued to defy father time and finished in a creditable ninth recording 4:32:07.25, being followed to the line by USA's Andrew Scarano of Team Pharmaco in 4:32.07.59, with top local endurance rider, Akil Campbell, securing the 11th position in 4:38:26.94.
With the fourth stage win and his second of four stages, Frayre tallied 90 points for the overall title, 12 points ahead of Brown (78) while Castaneda was third with 62 followed by Brian (54), Kelly (51), and Campbell, sixth with 45 points.
Abraham was the clear winner of the Masters 40 and over category, with Heatwave's Kirtson George second across the finish line in 4:58:15.18 hours while the veteran T&T cyclist also topped the overall standings with 64 points, well clear of George's 11 points.
In the Under-23 Division, Smith of the USA took the top spot ahead of Hlady and De Comarmond followed by Colombian Juan Nicolas Cano Vasquez of Team Sentry in 4:42:38.26, USA"s Caleb Landgrebe on Team Pharmaco JLD in 5:08:08.84 and T&T's Liam Trepte of Raiders, sixth in 5:12:53.54.
Smith ended as the overall winner of the U-23s with 63 points, the same as Hlady, while Trepte finished third with 39 points, followed by countrymen De Comarmond with 33 points and Woods with 13 points.
