Naparima College continued the winning trend that kept them ahead on the 16-team standings in the Premiership Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) after drubbing lowly Carapichaima Secondary School 3-0 at their Lewis Street Ground, San Fernando home on Saturday.
The win moved the former National champions 18 points in the standings. The result was expected, as Naps, entering the match as overwhelming favourites, having played unbeaten to date, were up against a team yet to win their first game. And the Southerners did not disappoint, with goals coming from the boot of Jerrel Cooper, Ryan Radellant, and Jaydon Caprietta. However, they face their southern arch rival, St Benedict’s College, in a match that could go in any direction on Wednesday at Lewis Street in San Fernando.
Only the day before, Naps manager Percy Samlalsingh said his charges were not going to take any team for granted, despite Carapichaima's winless season to date.
Despite their winning ways, Fatima College, last year’s League and North Zone InterCol champions, kept two points off the leaders by hammering St Augustine 5-1 at their Mucurapo Road home. Still to be beaten this season, after their opening-season triumph, the National Gas Company (NGC) Super Cup win against St Benedict’s College has lifted their youthful outfit. Fatima took early control and never let go.
Their win came courtesy of double strikes from Jaheim Bailey and Josiah Fernandes, with the multitalented Seth Hadeed adding the other goal. Meanwhile, Giovanni Hospedales scored the lone item for St Augustine Secondary, which is known as ‘The Green Machine'.
Coincidentally, it was the first loss for the Green Machine, which entered the contest with two wins and three drawn matches out of five matches.
At the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, Presentation College prevailed 1-0 in a dicey contest over Queen’s Royal College to move to 15 points. The lone item came from their prolific scorer, Isaiah Jacob, who has now scored in almost every game they played. The win also snapped a five-game winning streak by the Royalians, who will now have to pick themselves up, St Augustine Secondary being their next opponent at their Serpentine Road home.
