This year’s National Boxing Championships has been postponed.
Cecil Forde, president of the T&T Boxing Association said because of the tight schedule for regional and international tournaments so far, coupled with unforeseen circumstances, they have had to push the championships to January 18-21, 2024 at the Southern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Pleasantville, San Fernando.
The local boxing boss said he believes the postponement will also work in their favour, as they have several foreign boxers who have expressed an interest in taking part, ahead of the final two world boxing qualifiers for the Olympic Games in Paris, France next year.
The national championships were originally carded for November 2-5 at the same venue.
Local boxers were set to compete to determine the top fighters in the different weight divisions. The top fighters were guaranteed a place on the national teams for regional and international tournaments.
Currently, a T&T team is in Colombia, ahead of the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile from October 20 to November 5. They are Tianna Guy (featherweight division), super heavyweight Nigel Paul, middleweight Aaron Prince, flyweight Ortega Jokhu, and women’s heavyweight division Angel George. They were chosen to wear the red, white and black following their impressive display at the AMBC American Boxing Championships in Cali, Colombia, earlier this year.
Apart from the Pan Am, the boxers will have two other chances at qualifying for the Olympics at the world qualifiers, which will be held next year at date and venues to be determined.
