This year’s Na­tion­al Box­ing Cham­pi­onships has been post­poned.

Ce­cil Forde, pres­i­dent of the T&T Box­ing As­so­ci­a­tion said be­cause of the tight sched­ule for re­gion­al and in­ter­na­tion­al tour­na­ments so far, cou­pled with un­fore­seen cir­cum­stances, they have had to push the cham­pi­onships to Jan­u­ary 18-21, 2024 at the South­ern Re­gion­al In­door Sports Are­na in Pleas­antville, San Fer­nan­do.

The lo­cal box­ing boss said he be­lieves the post­pone­ment will al­so work in their favour, as they have sev­er­al for­eign box­ers who have ex­pressed an in­ter­est in tak­ing part, ahead of the fi­nal two world box­ing qual­i­fiers for the Olympic Games in Paris, France next year.

The na­tion­al cham­pi­onships were orig­i­nal­ly card­ed for No­vem­ber 2-5 at the same venue.

Lo­cal box­ers were set to com­pete to de­ter­mine the top fight­ers in the dif­fer­ent weight di­vi­sions. The top fight­ers were guar­an­teed a place on the na­tion­al teams for re­gion­al and in­ter­na­tion­al tour­na­ments.

Cur­rent­ly, a T&T team is in Colom­bia, ahead of the Pan Amer­i­can Games in San­ti­a­go, Chile from Oc­to­ber 20 to No­vem­ber 5. They are Tian­na Guy (feath­er­weight di­vi­sion), su­per heavy­weight Nigel Paul, mid­dleweight Aaron Prince, fly­weight Or­te­ga Jokhu, and women’s heavy­weight di­vi­sion An­gel George. They were cho­sen to wear the red, white and black fol­low­ing their im­pres­sive dis­play at the AM­BC Amer­i­can Box­ing Cham­pi­onships in Cali, Colom­bia, ear­li­er this year.

Apart from the Pan Am, the box­ers will have two oth­er chances at qual­i­fy­ing for the Olympics at the world qual­i­fiers, which will be held next year at date and venues to be de­ter­mined.
