T&T Police Service (men) and Magnolias (women) captured the respective men’s and women’s Open Division titles when the Magnolias Indoor Hockey5s Tournament concluded at the Woodbrook Youth Facility, Woodbrook, on September 6.
In a hotly contested men’s final, Police got a last-minute item from Solomon Eccles to snatch a come-from-behind 4-3 triumph over T&T Defence Force in the ‘Battle of the Protective Services’.
Daniel Byer had fired Defence Force into a fifth-minute lead in the final, only for Akim Toussaint to get Police back on level terms two minutes later.
However, on the stroke of the ten-minute half-time interval, Dylan Francis restored the lead for the Army/Coast-Guard combination.
Within two minutes of the restart, Cameron Adamson got Police back on even terms at 2-2 before Toussaint scored his second of the match for their first lead in the encounter at 3-2.
But, with two minutes left in the 20-minute clash, Mickel Pierre drew the Defence Force level at 3-3 to set up what looked like a penalty-stroke shoot-out decider, only for Eccles to fire home a dramatic last-minute winner for the Lawmen.
In the semifinals also played on Sunday, Jordan Reynos scored a hat-trick (15th, 17th, and 18th), and Nicholas Grant (19th) and Che Modeste (20th) scored one each to lead Police to a come-from-behind 5-1 whipping of Malvern, who had taken the lead through Jovan Wren in the tenth minute.
The Defence Force used strikes from David Coker in the sixth minute and Dylan Francis in the tenth to hold off Queen’s Park Cricket Club 2-1, with Jordan Vieira scoring in the 17th minute for the losers.
The women’s Open champion match was also a tense affair, with host club Magnolias going ahead inside the first minute through Samantha Olton, only for Paragon to reply with the space of 60 seconds through Jedyah Kistow.
Zuriel Antoine then put Paragon ahead in the 14th minute, but as the seconds ticked away to the final buzzer, Shaniah De Freitas scored for Magnolias, sending the match to a penalty-stroke shoot-out, where Magnolias prevailed 4-3, avenging away to the final buzzer, Shaniah De Freitas scored for Magnolias to send the match to the penalty-stroke shoot-out, where Magnolias prevailed 4-3, to exact revenge for their loss in the under-21 final.
Magnolias had booked their spot in the final by topping their three-team round-robin series, while Paragon defeated Ventures 3-1 in the lone semifinal led by a brace from Zuriel Antoine in the fourth and 14th minutes.
Felicia King-Ashby also scored for Paragon in the 13th, while Ventures got their lone reply from Kristin Abreu-Dhunna in the eighth minute.
In the Women’s Under-21 final, Paragon got goals from Zuriel Antoine in the fourth minute and Mikeisha De Silva in the ninth to secure a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Magnolias, who led as early as the second minute via Natania Rowe.
In the men’s Under-21 champion match, Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) got a goal each from Adam Chung in the 15th and Nicholas Siu Butt in the 20th to beat Insport 2-0 and complete a 3-0 series sweep.
In the Boys Under-17 final, Pro Sport Red got two goals from Adam Chung (eighth, 12th) and one from N’Kosi Marcelle (fifth) in a 3-1 whipping of Fatima, who had Dante Jones on target in the 14th, while Guyan’s Old Fort whipped Magnolias 5-2 behind a beaver-trick from Trinity Greaves in the Girls Under-17 final.
Greaves scored as early as the first, sixth, tenth and 20th, while Makayla Poole also scored for the visitors in the second minute to cancel out Magnolia’s replies through Nasya Stephens in the 14th and 16th.
