Despite a double strike by Robert Primus of AC Port-of-Spain that threatened to take the spotlight in Sunday’s (February 1) T&T Premier Football League at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, Club Sando FC prevailed in the end 3-2, which carried a result of more significance, that of Club Sando maintaining second on the 12-team standings in Tier 1.
The result fell in line with the fluctuating pattern that summed up the movement of the teams for the past months, but with the league now winding down to a close, the teams are jostling for positions for qualification to the Concacaf Caribbean Cup and Shield.
Club Sando’s 3-2 result came on the backs of an opening goal in the 5th minute by Jaheim Joseph and two other items from Luke Phillips and Shervohnez Hamilton in the 13th and 17th minutes that took them to the break large and in charge.
The Capital City Boyz, as AC Port-of-Spain has been known, responded in the second half with two goals. The first came in the 45+3 minute that reduced the margin to 3-1 from the big defender. And later, the same man, Primus, further reduced the goal tally in the 77th minute to 3-2, but not enough to earn them even a share of the points.
Coach Angus Eve’s charges stayed on the heels of the champions Defence Force (39 points) with 33 points, a mere three-point difference. The Capital City Boyz remained on 25 points in the fifth position but will be in danger of securing one of three places to play in either the Concacaf Caribbean Cup or Shield.
In another game on Sunday, San Juan Jabloteh remained in seventh place on the table with a 2-1 triumph over bottom-of-the-table Terminex La Horquetta Rangers. Veteran Kevon ‘Showtime’ Woodley pushed the La Horquetta men ahead first, courtesy of an 18th-minute penalty.
However, back-to-back goals in the second half from Jaheim Faustin in the 56th and 74th minutes assured the San Juan men the win and three points.
