Olympian Aaron Prince guaranteed T&T at least a bronze medal at the 2022 American Boxing Confederation Championships (AMBC) when he won his middleweight (71-75 kg) quarterfinal bout against Paraguay’s Nicolas Alvarez at the Voltaire Paladines Polo Coliseum in Guayaquil, Ecuador on Saturday night.
The 36-year-old Prince who became the oldest T&T athlete to represent this country in boxing at the Tokyo Olympic Games was too much for his South American opponent and won by knockout which forced referee Wulfren Olivares of Colombia to stop the bout two minutes into the first of three three-minute rounds.
In the semifinal, Prince, a member of the T&T Defence Force will face USA’s Obed Emmanuel Bartee-El II who defeated Canada Dylan Joseph Martin when Argentine referee Manuel Vilarino stopped their contest two minutes and 20 seconds into the second round.
In the other half of the middleweight quarterfinal, draw Dominican Republic’s Sergio Angel Moquete faced Mexican Hector Aguirre while Guyana’s Desmon Amsterdan faced Venezuelan Eldric Sella who sought asylum in T&T in 2018 and represented the Refugee Team at the last Olympic Games.
However, T&T’s other boxer in action on Saturday night, Andrew Fermin was halted in his quest for a medal by Cuban Herich Ruiz Cordova, a bronze medallist at the recent World Championship.
Cordova won the fight when referee Ramon Cobzac of Romania stopped the contest two minutes and 28 seconds into the second round.
On Sunday night, T&T’s Tiana Guy went into action in the women’s featherweight (54-57 kg) quarterfinals against Guatemalan Leilany Noshbet Reyes Moreno.
