Antonio Quashie and former national standout Nicholas Wren both had double strikes in leading Men’s Veterans champions Police to a comfortable 7-3 victory over Fatima in the Ventures Hockey Club’s 18th International Invitational Indoor Hockey Tournament on Saturday morning at the Woodbrook Youth Facility.
The lawmen had only the day before, clobbered Shape 7-2 but still faced a lengthy process in getting to the semifinal which begins today from 9 am.
The top two teams will advance to the round of four.
Yesterday though, it was another commanding performance from a team bidding to retain the title they won last year, however, they were made to come from behind.
Fatima’s Colin Young, the scorer of a hat-trick for his team, was the one to open the scoring after just six minutes. Later he completed his scoring with goals in the 18th and 22nd minutes, but it proved insufficient as Police were ruthless on the day.
Quashie scored his first goal in the tenth minute and he completed his brace in the 27th.
Wren, a former goal-scoring machine for the twin-island Republic got his goals in the 22nd and 30th, while Atiba Whittington (24th), Dwain Quan Chan (17th), and Neil Lashley (26th) rounded off the win for the lawmen.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s division, the Policewomen could not follow in the footsteps of their men’s counterparts, going down to a heavy 0-11 loss to Paragon. Alana Lewis (5th, 14th), Keima Gardiner (7th, 19th), Felicia King-Ashby (10th, 11th), Zene Henry (22nd, 31st), and Monika Lewis-Weekes (25th, 27th) all scored twice for their team while Gabrielle Thompson completed the rout in the 32nd minute.
Later Fatima was also at the end of an 8-0 drubbing in the Men’s B division by Queen’s Park.
The win came courtesy of a hat-trick by Dominic Young in the 18th, 19th and 28th minutes and double strikes from Shawn Lee Quay in the 1st and 32nd minutes.
Ironically, the host went down to Magnolia 1-3 in the women’s division courtesy of Samantha Olton’s brace in the 1st and 4th minutes, and Elise Olton’s 24th-minute item. The Ventures’ lone goal came from Anya Sealy in the 7th minute.
