Veteran quartermiler Renny Quow won the men's 400 metres at the Abilene Wildcats Track Classic at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain last Saturday.
The 36-year-old clocked 47.17 seconds and finished strongly from the inside lane in the final section to beat 2022 Carifta boys' Under-20 4x400m silver medallist Rinaldo Moore (47.47) and last year's Carifta boys' U-20 800m bronze medallist Stefan Camejo (47.49). Paris Olympics qualifying relay team member Che Lara was fourth (47.55).
Quow's winning time was his best clocking for the 2024 season, well off his personal best of 44.53, he set claiming the bronze medal at the 2009 World Outdoor Championships.
Speaking after the race the 2006 World U-20 400m champion said he is now looking ahead to the National Junior and Senior Championships/Olympic Trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from June 28-30.
"It was fun running against them (the younger athletes). I just wanted to get a meet in before (the) trials," said Quow.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics seventh-placed finisher in the men's 400m will be aiming at the Paris Olympics qualifying standard of 45.00 at the National Championships.
Adell Colthurst of host club Abilene Wildcats took the men's 100m gold in a season's best time of 10.46 seconds. The 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games and Carifta boys' U-18 100m winner took the title ahead of Simplex sprinter Raheem McCalman (10.56) and Matthew Patriots of UTT Patriots (10.66).
Symphony Patrick (Concorde) landed the women's 100m crown (1.93) ahead of Kadija Pickering of Abilene Wildcats (12.08) while Stallion's Angel Cumberbatch beat the field in the 400m. Pickering rebounded to win the 200m (24.85) with Cumberbatch taking bronze behind Imani Mills of Memphis Pioneers (25.71).
Concorde's Michal Paul added the Abilene Classic boys' U-15 400m honours to the National Juvenile title he won on June 1. Paul missed out on gold in the 200m as he had to settle for silver behind Sean Hart of Cougars.
Triple Juvenile champion Nyla Kerr of Cougars was among several athletes to bag Abilene titles to add to the gold medals won at the Juvenile Championships. Kerr prevailed in the girls' 800m ahead of Juvenile high jump/100m hurdles winner QRC's La Queen Welch had earlier won the 400m.
Akilah Chinapoo (Simplex) and Josiah Kaiten (Memphis Pioneers) grabbed the U-13 100m gold medals to complement their triumphs at the Juvenile and Primary Schools Schools Championships.
The Cougars duo of Naomi Phillip and Tae'Han Alexander Joseph sped away with the U-11 100m dashes to match their 80m success at Juveniles.
Elijah Joseph of Mounting Eagles secured the men's 200m crown and was a member of his club's victorious men's 4x100m and 4x400m teams.
Cyril Sumner (Memphis Pioneers) won the men's 800m in a personal best time of 1:55.09. The 2022 Carifta boys' U-20 4x400m silver medallist lowered his time for the third time this year.
