Leandra Ramdeen took six wickets for just seven runs to help Powergen Women’s Cricket Club defend its 50-Over title in the Premiership Division by beating Hibiscus Ladies in the final round of the competition hosted by the T&T Women’s Cricket Association (TTWCA) on Sunday (February 23).
Playing at Honeymoon Park in Tunapuna, the defending champion made light work of Hibiscus Ladies beating them by eight wickets to end the opening league with five wins and one no-result for 52 points, two ahead of closest challengers the University of the West Indies Women’s Cricket Club (UWI WCC) who also sealed a win in the final round.
The Hibiscus team batted first and was bowled out for just 54 runs in 20 overs with Jessica Wedderburn and Jerveeena Pollucksingh, being its main run getters each with 13.
Ramdeen ran through the Hibiscus Ladies batting line-up and had good support from Kimberly John (1-13) and Jessica O’Rosco (1-14) each with a wicket.
In reply, Powergen Women reached the winning target of 55/2 in 14.1 overs. Samantha Bissoon was the leading scorer with a brisk 28 not out from 36 balls and Anjalie Goordeen added a patient 14 from 36 balls. Second-placed UWI WCC finished the 50-over League with five wins and one loss for 50 points. This after, UWI WCC defeated eventual third-placed finishers Caldrac Achievers by four wickets at the Caldrac Ground in California.
The Achievers took first strike and posted 126/9 in 41.2 overs with Rachel Vincent leading the scoring with 45 while her teammates allrounder Tiffany Asson added 21 and Maya Harry produced 20. In the battle of the teams at the bottom of the table at Bhim Shaw Recreation Ground in Tableland, AC Women got the better of Players Sports Club (SC) by seven wickets but will still be relegated to the Championship Division due to its net run rate (NRR) of minus-2.58 which placed they last in the seven-team competition, compared to Players SC minus-2.55.
The Championship Division’s Twenty20 (T20) competition got going also on Sunday and the reigning league (30-Over) champion Sital Youngsters sealed huge wins in their opening matches. Playing at the Beaucarro Recreation Ground in Mc Bean, the Youngsters beat the Brenda Solozano Cricket Academy (BSCA) by nine wickets and later, Cricket Lovers by eight wickets.
Victoria Cricket Club (CC) also open the T20 League with victories against the Moses Lendore Cricket Academy (MLCA), by eight wickets and North Zone by 44 runs at the Oropouche South recreation ground.
There will be no matches on the weekend as the league breaks for Carnival. Action in the Premiership T20 competition starts on March 9 while the Championship league in the shorter format resumes.
