Charlotte Ready joined Aalisha Alexis as the second of two qualifiers from the Trials to make it on the T&T team for the Billie Jean King Cup Tournament, which gets going with a 12-nation Americas Zone Group III play-off from August 5-11 in T&T.
In the five-woman Trials at the National Racquet Centre in Orange Grove, Tacarigua over the past three days, Ready got her campaign off with an almost flawless 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Carissa Rudolpho on the opening day, Friday. But she faltered when the unbeaten Alexis stopped her in her tracks Saturday, confining her to her first loss 6-3, 6-3.
Alexis had since gone on to seal her place on the team with victories over Rudolpho, and then Cameron Wong yesterday.
Ready though, still had a distance to go, as she faced the pair of Jaeda-Lee Daniel-Joseph and Wong, this year's Under-18 Catch National Junior Tennis Championships winner, in her two other matches yesterday.
Against Daniel-Joseph the second-seeded Ready prevailed in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 for her second win of the tournament, and later yesterday she came from a set down 5-7 against the top-ranked Wong to prevail 6-4, 10-1 on court five.
The win prevented Wong, the only other player in with a chance of qualifying for the top two spots after Rudolpho and Daniel-Joseph had surrendered too many matches.
Wong surprisingly lost twice yesterday, with Alexis being the other player she went down to.
Also on the final day yesterday, Rudolpho got her first win of the play-off by clobbering the fourth-seeded Daniel-Joseph 6-1, 6-0.
The results placed Alexis at the top of the standing with eight points in four matches, with Ready on six points in the same amount of games.
Both Alexis and Ready will join Yolande Leacock and Jordane Dookie on the T&T team for the August 5-11 play-off, which will also feature players from Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica, Panama, St Lucia, and the United States Virgin Islands.
The countries are set to be divided into three groups of four teams where only the group winners will advance to engage in a similar round-robin play-off for the top two spots to qualify for Group II to be contested next year.
