KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Reggae Girlz registered their second win in as many matches against South Africa when they defeated them 3-2 in the last international friendly at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Monday.
After comfortably winning the opening match 3-0 last Friday, Jamaica found themselves behind early on when Linda Motlhalo gave the visitors the lead in the 20th minute when she slotted past goalkeeper Liya Brooks from close range.
However, the home side got on level terms in the second half thanks to Vyan Sampson, who found the back of the net from a rebound in the 59th minute after Khadija Shaw’s initial header had been saved.
Drew Spence then put the Reggae Girlz in the lead five minutes later, heading the ball powerfully past South Africa’s goalkeeper Kaylin Swart.
Swart pulled off a stunning save moments later when she got a glove to a powerful left footed shot from Shaw.
Kayla McKenna, who replaced Shaw, extended Jamaica’s lead to 3-1, finishing from close range after beating the South African defence.
South Africa managed to pull back a goal in extra time when Brooks fumbled an easy catch and Nicole Michael took full advantage to poke it across the goal line, but the Reggae Girlz held on for the win.
