Daija Reid was the star of the opening day in the National Association of Athletics Administrations of T&T (NAAATT)/National Gas Company (NGC)/Republic Bank Junior Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain Saturday.
The Zenith Athletics Club athlete won three gold medals in the girls' Under-15 category, topping the long jump, shot put and 60 metres hurdles events.
Reid opened with victory in the long jump with a best leap of 5.23m to finish ahead of second-placed Gloria Henry of Rising Super Stars (RSS)Phoenix with 5.14m and Neon Wolves' Chardine Morris, who was third with 4.92m.
Later on in the morning session, she reached the top spot in the shot put with her best effort measuring 10.10m. J'Lenn Roberts of IG Fastlane copped the silver medal with 9.35m-effort and the bronze went to Akeya Gonzales (D'Abadie) with 8.89m.
In the evening session, she got success on the track winning the 60m hurdles in a time of 9.42 seconds, again ahead of Roberts (10.08) and Zenith teammate Hannah Irvine (10.38), respectively.
Omari Brown of Neon Wolves and Kellon Potts of RSS Phoenix also shined on day one, nabbing double gold medals in their respective boys' U-17 and U-15 categories.
Brown topped the long jump with a 6.50m-leapt to beat Jhariel Williams (RSS Phoenix) with 6.25m into second and Isaiah John (Burnley) with 6.12m into third.
The Neon Wolves athlete's other win came in the 100m hurdles with a 14.07 clocking. In second place was Devonte Romeo (Kaizen Panthers) in 15.09 and in third, Williams with a timing of 15.17.
Meanwhile, Potts' successes came over on the field.
The RSS Phoenix field thrower heaved his way to first place in discus. His best mark measured 43.10m, to better the efforts of Adrenaline Ducks' Marcion Davis (39.78m) and Ascend Athletics club's Tristan Morgan (33.10m), respectively.
His other win was in the javelin throw with his 45.83m earning him the top spot comfortably. Josiah Hepburn (Lions Athletic) got the silver with 37.24m and Kyron Moore (RSS Phoenix), the bronze with 34.74m.
Janae De Gannes was another highlight on the track on the opening day. She returned from a successful season in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I circuit with Baylor University, to win the girls' U-20 100m for Concorde with an 11.59-timing ahead of Simplex's Sierra Joseph with 11.98 in second and Noemi Theodore (Phoenix) with 12.00 in third.
De Gannes will chase another gold Sunday in the long jump event in the mornng session. She will compete in flight two.
After 40 events scored on the first day, RSS Phoenix comfortably leads the table with 244 points, 119 points more than second-placed Pace & Performance Factor (PFF) with 125. In third place is Zenith with 99.
Action resumes on Sunday at 9 am.
