Jereem Richards booked his spot in the semi­fi­inal round of the men' 400m with a com­fort­able win in the heats on sec­ond day of the 2025 World Out­door Track and Field Cham­pi­onships at the Na­tion­al Sta­di­um,Tokyo, Japan on Sun­day.

Richards raced to win in the first of heat six heat in 44.64 sec­onds. The 2022 World In­door 400m cham­pi­on fin­ished ahead of the 2022 World Un­der 20 one-lap win­ner Lythe Pil­lay of South Africa (44.73) and Great Britain's Charles Dob­son (44.85). Richards' 44.69 clock­ing was the 17th best over­all and well off of best time for 2o025 (44.14). Amer­i­can cham­pi­on and Di­a­mond League fi­nals win­ner Ja­co­ry Pat­ter­son was the fastest with 43..90 in win­ning heat 3. An­oth­er Amer­i­can Khaleb Mc Crae was sec­ond quick­est (44.25) in tak­ing the sixth heat. Pil­lay's com­pa­tri­ot Za­kithi Nene (44.34), the win­ner of heat 3, was next best.,

For­mer Olympic and World Cham­pi­onship gold medal­list and this year's North Amer­i­can, Cen­tral Amer­i­can and Caribbean (NACAC) cham­pi­on Grena­di­an Ki­rani James ad­vanced af­ter he was third be­hind Mc Crae in 44.66. De­fend­ing Cham­pi­on An­to­nio Wat­son of Ja­maica missed out af­ter he crossed the line in eighth in heat 5 (46.23)

The semi­fi­nals are sched­uled for to­mor­row (Tue, Sep 16) 8:25am (TT time)/9:35pm (Japan time). Richards will line up in lane 7 of a com­pet­i­tive sec­ond "se­mi" and will aim­ing to fin­ish among the top two to be as­sured of a lane in the fi­nals on Thurs­day. Pat­ter­son, Pil­lay, Dob­son and Ja­maican record hold­er Rusheen Mc Don­ald are all in the same race.

Richards reached the semi­fi­nal round at the 2023 World Out­door and was fourth in in the Paris Oympics in na­tion­al record of 43.78.
