The 2022 World Indoor 400m champion bettered the 20.16 standard to earn a lane at the July 26-August 11 Paris Olympics in France. The 2018/2022 Commonwealth Games 200m gold medallist came off the bend trailing Nigerian Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike but produced his trademark late surge to take the lead 40m before the line to secure his second 200m win for the 2024 season. Richards, speaking to Guardian Media on Sunday morning as he left Jamaica, was pleased with the win.
"It was a solid run. I am satisfied with where I am at right now. I am a bit stronger than I am speedy, but I trust in God and I trust in my coaches when the time comes I will be able to run what I think I am fully capable of running. I thank God I was able to come away with a victory and acquire the Olympic standard but finish a healthy race," said Richards.
He added that his second 200m victory for the year was motivating.
"I feel good about having a second win. It gives me confidence. This type of win helps build your confidence and I am excited for the rest of the season."
