Rising Super Stars (Rss) Phoenix Youth and Sport Club emerged as the top club after two days of action at the National Juvenile Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain over the weekend (June 1-2). The Rss Phoenix athletes earned 663.5 points to retain the crown they captured in 2023.
Former winners Cougars (438) were second ahead of Zenith (396) with last year's runners-up Burnley (291.5) in fourth. Lambeau Alliance (156), Memphis Pioneers (153), Simplex (123) and Mercury (123) finished in the top eight positions.
Leading the way for Rss Phoenix was Gloria Henry won seven medals. Competing in the girls' Under-13 division Henry was glorious in the 400 metres, high jump and 300m hurdles. She also captured silver in the 60m hurdles and bronze in the ball throw amd 4x100m relay. The Signal Hill Government Primary School Standard Three student completed her medal haul by anchoring her club to silver in the girls' U-15 sprint medley relay. She led her club to a sweep of the medals in the girls' U-13 300m hurdles. The one-two-three was the second for the club at the meet after Duane Nichols, Rechard Blackman and Malique John won gold, silver and bronze for Rss Phoenix in the boys' U-11 high jump.
Seth Sylvester and Nyla Kerr were the top medal winners for second-placed Cougars.
Sylvester landed the boys' U-13 400m, 800m and 300m hurdles titles. He also earned silver in the 200m ad 80m hurdles and bronze in the 4x100m.
Kerr topped the field in the girls' U-15 400m, 800m ad 300m hurdles and was second in the 800m. She anchored her club to bronze in the sprint medley relay and was fifth in the 100m hurdles and 4x100m finals.
Xiah Tobias was one of the stars for Zenith with her quadruple wins in the girls' U-15 100m, 200m, 4x100m and sprit medley. The 2024 Carifta Girls U-17 4x100m bronze medallist led her club to a sweep in the 100m as her fellow Carifta medallist Miliyah Cupid and Daija Reid were second and third, respectively. Tobias was also second in the long jump.
Karissa Williams shone for Burnley with gold in the girls' U-15 shot put, discus and javelin throws. Jayden Goodridge (Boys' U-15 100m/200m), Isaiah John (Boys' U-15 long jump/300m hurdles) were also triple winners for Burnley as the two combined to lead Burnley to victories in the 4x100m and sprint medley relays.
Azzari Willaims blazed the way for Lambeau Alliance with wins in the boys' U-11 80m, long jump and ball throw. He claimed silver in the 150m.
Josiah Kaiten was triple gold medallist for Memphis Pioneers in the boys' U-13 100m, 200m and 4x400m.
Akilah Chinapoo ran away with the girls U-13 100m and 200m dashes for Simplex. Mikael Serrette of Phoenix (Boys' U-15 800m/1500m), QRC's La Queen Welch (Girls' U-15 100m hurdles/High jump) and Zenith's Kiome Reid (Girls Under 9 60m/Long jump) were double winners.
The next events on the local track and field calendar are the Abilene Wildcats Track Classic (June 8) and the National Masters Championships (June 9) both to be held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
