Condolences continue to pour in for the family and friends of former national footballer Clyde Leon who died on Wednesday of a suspected heart attack. He was just 37 years old.
Coincidentally his death also brings to five, the number of players from T&T Pro League outfit W Connection in the last two years, following the passings of Shahdon Winchester, Roderick Anthony, Ateba Mc Knight and Jason Marcano.
Leon, a midfielder who played for Arima Fire and W Connection in the T&T Pro League, as well as the T&T Senior team where he made 48 international appearances within a 12-year span from (2001-2012), coincidentally called an end to his career because of heart troubles.
Born December 8 in 1983, Leon became the pride of his Laventille community in the sport of football. He was elevated to the position of captain under coach Russell Latapy, who himself was a former T&T midfielder. But for all his brilliance on the ball, the talented midfielder only managed to score once.
After his exit from the sport, Leon began a new chapter in the area of coaching, first at W Connection and later with the country's Under-15 and Under-17 teams.
Leon's death sent shockwaves throughout the football fraternity, with many ex-national players taking to social media to express their sadness and shock.
Yesterday a release from the T&T Football Association said: " Clyde was a loyal and humble servant to football who has left some wonderful memories that will never fade from our hearts. The T&T Football Association is extending deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family of former National Men's team midfielder Clyde Leon following his passing this morning. Reports are that Clyde died of a heart attack earlier today. Leon, 37, is a past Men's national senior team team and youth team player. He also served as Men's National U-17 and U-15 Assistant Coach.
The former W Connection FC player won the T&T Pro League title with the club in 2011/2012. He made 48 appearances for this Country after making his international debut against Guyana in an international friendly on March 2nd 2004.
He also wore the captain's armband for the T&T Senior Team for which his final appearance came in a Caribbean Cup qualifier against Suriname on November 16th 2012 at the Dwight Yorke Stadium."
W Connection Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Renee John-Williams said: " Clyde’s sudden passing was a devastating blow for our organization, even as we remain in pause due to COVID. He was a part of the W Connection family for the last 18 years as a player starting in 2003 with our U-20 team and was always passionate about the game and our club.
He represented well at all levels in the domestic game - SSFL, Pro League, and on the National Team and will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he impacted. He was a good friend to us all and we are heartbroken by this loss.
We wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to his son, his family, friends and loved ones. Rest In Peace Clyde. We will miss you."
