Defending champions San Juan South Secondary cruised into the semifinals of the T&T Secondary Schools Volleyball League (SSVL) Boys Under-19 Division after topping their Group A round-robin qualifiers at the Aranguez North Secondary Schools on Sunday (January 18).
This after the Curtis Burkette-coached San Juan South Secondary won their opening match against the late arriving Fatima College 25-0, 25-15; Presentation College of Chaguanas 25-17, 25-10 and Naparima College 25-11, 25-19 to end with three wins from as many matches.
Naparima College won their two other matches, 25-10, 25-18 against Presentation College of Chaguanas, and 25-18, 17-25, 15-14 over Fatima College to finish second
with the latter taking the second quarterfinal spot from the group courtesy their 25-18, 25-23 defeat of Presentation College of Chaguanas, with the latter eliminated from the playoffs.
The teams who will contest Group B of the Boys Under-19 Division at the same Aranguez North Secondary on Sunday, January 25 are last year’s national runners-up Barrackpore West Secondary, ASJA Boys College, Maple Leaf International and St George’s Secondary.
Barrackpore West books U-15 vball final spot
Last Wednesday (January 14), host Barrackpore West Secondary moved to within one win of retaining their title in the Boys Under-15 Division after topping the three-team round-robin playoffs to reach the final.
Barrackpore Secondary, the defending national age-group champions swept past St Joseph Secondary School 25-5, 25-12 in their opening match and followed it up with a 25-13, 25-8 beating of Naparima College to end the day with a perfect 2-0 reach and secure the spot in the national final at the National Cycling Centre (NCC) at Balmain, Couva on Tuesday, February 3.
In the opening match yesterday, Naparima defeated St Joseph Secondary 25-11, 25-15 with both teams set to meet again in the lone semifinal.
The league resumes on Wednesday, January 21 from 10 am, with Girls Under-15 Group A round-robin matches at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Tacarigua from 9 am featuring International School Port-of-Spain, St Augustine Girls High School, Holy Faith Convent (Couva), Holy Name Convent (Port-of-Spain), and Naparima Girls’ High School.
A week ago at Tacarigua, ASJA Girls’ College of San Fernando topped Group B of the round-robin qualifiers to advance to the semifinals with St Josephs’ Convent (PoS0, and St Joseph’s Convent (St Joseph) second, and third respectively to reach the quarterfinals.
