Scarborough Methodist and Tablepiece Government emerged as the champion girls' schools of the 2024 National Primary Schools Netball League.
Scarborough Methodist got the better of St Gabriel's Roman Catholic in the postponed league title decider at the Shaw Park Hard Court in Scarborough on Monday (June 17). Scarborough, the Tobago District winner, prevailed 11-8 over the Victoria champion St Gabriel's RC.
Scarborough was first to score, getting the opening goal three minutes into the match with goal attack Tineil Burris, the scorer. Lanky Burris fired up the Scarborough supporters as she was responsible for the next three goals to give the maroon-clad girls a 4-0 lead. The St Gabriel's players eventually got on the score sheets after nine minutes when goal-shooter Akeba Andrews converted. Andrews and her teammates rallied back to trail 6-4 at halftime.
On the resumption, Scarborough regained the upper hand with four unanswered goals to extend the advantage to 8-4 thanks again to Burris up front and timely defending by petite goal-keeper Naalainee Thomas.
However, their opponents fought back with solid defending by goal-defence Adrielle Joseph which led to turnovers for her team. Andrews hit her shots as St Gabriel's cut the lead to 9-8. Burris took Scarborough to the title as she launched the final goal to send the Scarborough fans into a frenzy. Burris was the top scorer of the match with nine goals from 12 attempts in only her first year in the sport. Goal-shooter Kaliah Williams contributed two goals. Andrews ended with six goals for the runner-up.
Earlier in the day, Tablepiece captured the girls' team shooting honours dismissing Barataria Anglican. The Tablepiece girls set the standard scoring 77 of their 130 attempts.
