Shelbourne, Paul meet Carifta standards in 2 events

Ker­ne­sha Shel­bourne and reig­in­ing Carif­ta Games girls' Un­der-20 hep­tathlon bronze medal­list Gi­an­na Paul, each met the stan­dard for the up­com­ing Games in two events at the Na­tion­al As­so­ci­a­tion of Ath­let­ics Ad­min­is­tra­tions of T&T (NAAATT) track and field Se­ries No 2 held on Sun­day at the Hase­ly Craw­ford Sta­di­um in Mu­cu­rapo, Port-of-Spain.

They were among nine ath­letes achiev­ing the qual­i­fy­ing stan­dards ahead of the 50th edi­tion of the thjree-day meet, set to take place in Nas­sau, Ba­hamas over the East­er week­end (April 7-10)

Shel­bourne of Oa­sics Ath­let­ics topped the Girls U-20 triple jump with a 12.01 me­tres-leap to go past the 11.77m Carif­ta stan­dard. Lo­ra Morales (To­co Tafac) was a far-off sec­ond with 7.70m.

The Oa­sics Ath­let­ics jumper al­so won the high jump, clear­ing bar at 1.76m with Paul of Con­corde sec­ond with in 1.65m with both sur­pass­ing the 1.64m-stan­dard.

Paul al­so placed sec­ond in the Girls U-20 long jump with 5.80m be­hind club­mate Janae De Gannes, who won with 6.05m ef­fort to both go past the qual­fy­ing dis­tance of 5.55m. In third place was Kian­na Hamil­ton (IG Fast­lane) with 4.14m.

Last year's girls' U-17 high jump sil­ver medal­list, Tenique Vin­cent, al­so of Con­corde main­tained her form in win­ning the event at the sec­ond se­ries host­ed by the NAAATT. She won with a 1.60m-leap (1.57m-stan­dard), re­spec­tive­ly, ahead of La Queen Welch of QRC (1.40m) and To­co Tafac's Ja­da Thomas (1.25m).

Vin­cent was sec­ond in the girls' U-17 shot put (12.15m) with 10.29m, to Pey­ton Win­ter (Burn­ley), who won with a 12.17m-throw to go over the stan­dard (12.15m). Sofia Quam­i­na of D'Abadie was third with 8.82m.

Ta­fari Wal­dron, the 2022 boys U-20 5,000m Carif­ta bronze medal­list, clocked four min­utes and 06.02 sec­onds to top the boys' U-20 1,500m to go un­der the 4:11.47-stan­dard. The Cougars mid­dle-dis­tance run­ner fin­ished ahead of Jah­bar­ri Richards (To­co Tafac) with 4:32.49 in sec­ond and Omari Kur­del (D'Abadie) with 4:33.89 in third.

Joshua Mas­call (Fyz­abad) was the win­ner in the boys' U-20 200m fi­nal with 21.72 sec­onds to al­so go un­der the 21.74-stan­dard ahead of Cougars duo Michael Jack (21.98) and Je­si­ah Pe­ters (22.19).

Jaden Clement was the oth­er ath­lete meet­ing the Carif­ta stan­dard in the boys' U-17 100m (11.04) with an 11.03-clock­ing. The Max­imis­ing Ath­lete Po­ten­tial (MAP) sprint­er, fin­ished ahead Kadeem Chi­napoo (Sim­plex) with 11.08 and Ka­reem Gib­son (UNA) with 11.15.

Ani­ah Bai­ley (OAW) raced the clock in the girls' U-17 1,500m and crossed in a time of 5:01.64 to go un­der the qual­i­fy­ing time of 5:02.23.
