Hail Signal Hill Secondary, winner of the Girls National Coca-Cola Intercol title.
Also yesterday afternoon, St Mary’s College was crowned Big Five title winners although playing to a goalless tie with host Arima North Secondary.
In Couva, Signal Hill defeated a 10-man Five Rivers Secondary 3-1 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain amidst much excitement. Afterward, coach Ray Mitchell said it was a very intense match but in the end, his girls, who have really worked hard this season, were deserving of the victory.
The match was just 10 minutes old when a shot heading goal-bound was handled by Five Rivers’ Jenella Walcott. The latter was then given marching orders by the referee, while the visitors were given a penalty which Alexandria Stewart fired in with aplomb for a 1-0 advantage.
Later, the Tobagonians then got items from Twinkle Thomas and an own-goal, both in the second half of play to go 3-0 ahead.
With 10 players, however, the easterners pulled a goal back from the prolific Luan Craigg which served as some consolation.
Mitchell said at the beginning of the season he has had to pull together a bunch of under-15 players to make up his team, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. His team will next take on St Joseph’s Convent of Port-of-Spain in the final of the U-15 girls’ division.
Meanwhile, CIC and Arima North had to share the points from a 0-0 tie which meant both teams finished on the same points (10 points) and goal difference. The Port-of-Spain men were then handed the trophy by virtue of having scored more goals than their opponents, 12 goals scored to four received.
Arima North scored eight goals but had none against them. However, both teams advanced to the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) next year.
