T&T Premier Football League 2025/2026 Tier I Division third-place finisher T&T Prison Service FC suffered a 4-3 loss to Guyana's Slingerz FC in the round of 16 of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) 22-team Club Shield competition at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain, Saturday.
Winners of their round-of-32 encounter with SWA Sharks FC of Turks & Caicos 4-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium, in Couva on Thursday, Slingerz FC took the lead against T&T Prison Service FC in the 18th minute through Kemar Beckford.
However, the Dexter Cyrus-coached Prison Service team hit back with goals from Ronell Paul in the 32nd and off-season signing Ezekiel Kezar, seven minutes later, to take a 2-1 lead into the half-time interval.
On the resumption, Slingerz FC came out the hungrier of both teams and drew level in the 59th minute through Beckford's second goal of the contest.
The Guyanese club then regained the lead in the 68th minute through Neron Barrow and five minutes into time added, T&T international Derrel "Zum Zum" Garcia put the result beyond doubt with a fourth item.
Three minutes later, T&T Prison Service FC managed to cut the margin to 3-4 with a strike from Kevon Williams, but in the end, Slingerz FC held on for the win to book their spot in the quarterfinals against the winner of last night's round-of-16 encounter between SV Robinhood of Suriname and St Lucia's La Cleary.
SV Robinhood was on a first-round bye while La Cleary got a double from Shaquille De Gazon (16th pen, 26th) in a 2-1 win over Roaring Lions FC of Anguilla, with Christon Williams scoring a 90th-minute consolation for the losers.
In addition to the T&T Prison Service FC and SV Robinhood, Mount Pleasant FC (Jamaica), Baltimore SC (Haiti), Delfines del Este FC (Dominican Republic), along with the three highest-ranked amateur clubs, Inter Willemstad (Curacao), Metropolitan FA (Puerto Rico) and SV Britannia (Aruba), were given byes to the round of 16.
Weymouth Wales FC of Barbados was also handed a spot in the last-16 along with All Saints United of Antigua, but the latter withdrew.
Sunday, double-header round-of-16 matches are carded for both the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima and the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
At Malabar, Baltimore SC faces Helenites SC of the US Virgin Islands from 1.30 pm, followed by Metropolitan against St Vincent and the Grenadines' North Leeward Predators FC from 4 pm, while at Mucurapo, CVV Inter Willemstad meets Dublanc FC of Dominica at 3.30 pm, followed by Delfines Del Este and Elite Sports Club at 6 pm.
The quarterfinals are carded for July 28, ahead of the semifinals on July 31, and the championship match on August 2, with the top two teams qualifying for this year’s Concacaf Caribbean Cup, which serves as a qualifier as well for the Concacaf Champions Cup.
