Former World champion Gwendolyn Smith was a fifth-place finisher in the women’s 60-64 division discus final at the World Masters Athletics (WMA) World Masters Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, Saturday.
Smith, who has already won a silver at the event in the women’s 60-64 shot put, best mark measured 29.01 achieved in round two. She opened with 28.98m and fouled the third attempt which saw her earn three more throws in the top eight after the first three rounds. She had marks of 25.85m, 27.87m and 28.21m, in the fourth to sixth rounds, respectively, to finish in fifth spot.
T&T’s Suzan Garcia also competed in the event and placed 18th with a season-best 20.98m. She also had throws of 17.25 in the opening round and followed up with 20.45m.
Noelyn Toby-Davis, who was listed to compete, was scratched from the event.
Earlier, Joyce Thomas, another former World champion, placed 14th in the women’s 75-79 shot put final. Her best effort was a distance of 6.46m, a season’s best.
T&T remained with two medals following action on day four. The other medal was won by Geraldine George, a bronze in the women’s 50-54 age group javelin throw.
Today, T&T men’s sprinters Rondell Paul, Murrien Mitchell, Martin Prime and Raymond Smith will take the track again hoping to earn a spot on the podium in the 200m dash.
Paul will line up in the 35-39 age-group, Mitchell in the 45-49 category, and both Prime and Smith in the 60-64 division. On Wednesday, Mitchell reached the final of the 100m, crossing the line in a season-best 11.74 but placed seventh. Prime reached as far as the semifinals in the men’s 60-64 division, placing fifth and 11th overall in semifinal heat two with 12.96. Smith did not progress out of the men’s 60-64 preliminary heats after he placed fourth with 13.97 to finish 36th overall.
Cheryl Andrews-Reyes will be the lone field athlete competing that day in the women’s 65-69 hammer throw final. Andrews-Reyes, who enters with a season’s best 20.12m, also contested the women’s 65-69 shot put final and finished ninth with 7.24m.
