Speyside High School on Tuesday secured the right to contest their sixth zonal InterCol title in the sister isle of Tobago.
This after they defeated Mason Hall Secondary 5-3 at the Plymouth recreation ground after the teams were deadlocked on two goals apiece at the end of regulation time.
The dangerous Riquelme Phillips opened the scoring for the boys from the countryside in the fifth minute, a lead they enjoyed at the halftime interval until Tariq St Louis knotted up the scores at one apiece in the 62nd.
Later in the 77th minute, Mason Hall snatched the advantage for the first time in the game, courtesy of a Jalen Quashie item. But with the game heading to an end, Phillips saved the Speyside blushes with his second of the afternoon in the 84th minute, sending the game to the penalty spot to be decided.
From the spot kicks, however, there was no stopping Speyside who claimed the title four times on a trot in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, as well as in 2019. Their battles in the Tobago Zone have been a see-saw affair with multiple-time champions Signal Hill Secondary, who are yet to secure their place in the final, after yesterday's second semifinal contest between them (Signal Hill) and Bishop's High School, was called off, due to poor lighting at the Plymouth Recreation Ground.
In Trinidad, Championship Division winner Miracle Ministries made another giant step toward another title by beating Carapichaima East Secondary School 3-0 at the Edinburgh 500 recreation ground in Chaguanas. Three unanswered goals from Keon Kissoon, Jabari Rodriguez, and Josiah Hypolite sealed their entry into the final of the Central Zone where they will face Chaguanas North Secondary next week.
The Chaguanas North lads progressed to the final by thrashing Carapichaima West Secondary 4-0 at the Brickfield Recreation Ground. Goals from Jeremiah Villafana, Nekaysi Moore, Zaiden James, and Megaste Moore proved to be sufficient on the day.
