St Hillaire, Walters win in Bahamas

T&T's Dwight St Hillaire and Rue­bin Wal­ters ran fast times to win their re­spec­tive events in the in­vi­ta­tion­al sec­tion of the Ba­hamas Cham­pi­onships which took place over the week­end in Nas­sau, Ba­hamas.

St Hillaire along with com­pa­tri­ot Kyle Greaux com­pet­ed in the men's 200 me­tres event and clocked good times in the pre­lim­i­nary heats be­fore the for­mer went on to win in a time of 20.86 sec­onds.

This af­ter both ad­vanced to the fi­nal with St Hillaire top­ping heat three in 21.14 while Greaux, who opt­ed out the fi­nale, won the sec­ond heat with a 21.26-clock­ing.

In the men's 110m hur­dles event, it was a bat­tle be­tween T&T's hur­dlers Wal­ters (13.65) and Mikel Thomas (13.66) as the for­mer edged his com­pa­tri­ot at the line.

An­oth­er T&T hur­dler who was in ac­tion at the meet was Sparkle McK­night and she was the lone en­trant in the women’s 400m hur­dles, raced the clock and stopped it at 56.93.

De­on Lendore was the fastest in the qual­i­fy­ing round of the men’s 400m with 45.16 sec­onds to win the third heat on Fri­day. How­ev­er, the lo­cal quar­ter-mil­er opt­ed not to com­pete in the B fi­nal.

Al­so on Fri­day, Akan­ni His­lop was the run­ner-up in the men’s 100m “B” fi­nal with a time of 10.34 just ahead of Richard Thomp­son, who was third in 10.35.

The best fin­ish­ers among the five T&T sprint­ers that lined up in the dash which was won by An­tiguan Ce­jhae Greene in 10.33. Kion Ben­jamin (10.39), Em­manuel Cal­len­der (10.49) and Jerod El­cock (10.56) placed fourth, fifth and sev­enth, re­spec­tive­ly.

In the qual­i­fy­ing round, His­lop crossed first in the open­ing race in 10.33 and was third over­all with Thomp­son and El­cock fol­low­ing him to the line in 10.44 and 10.53, re­spec­tive­ly. Ben­jamin (10.42), Cal­len­der (10.42) and Tyrell Ed­wards (10.55) filled the top three spots in heat three while in heat five Greaux was sec­ond in 10.50 and Ke­ston Bled­man, fourth with 10.72.

In the women's 100m “B” fi­nal, Se­moy Hack­ett clocked 11.42 to place sec­ond while Kai Selvon was fifth in 11.50. Hack­ett ran a wind-as­sist­ed 11.32 in the pre­lim­i­nary round, while Selvon placed sixth the line in a with 11.69 (3.3-wind).

At the Ja­maica Cham­pi­onships held at the Na­tion­al Sta­di­um in Kingston T&T's, Kel­ly-Ann Bap­tiste clocked 11.19 in the pre­lim­i­nar­ies of the women's 100m on Thurs­day. As a for­eign­er, the lo­cal sprint­er could not com­pete in the semi­fi­nals.

An­oth­er T&T ath­lete al­so com­pet­ed at the meet, Veay­on Joseph in Fri­day’s Boys Un­der-20 javelin and his best throw mea­sured 59.45m.

On Sun­day at the JAC Gold­en South­east Clas­sic in Jack­sonville, Flori­da, USA, Asa Gue­vara won the men's 400m in 46.98 af­ter top­ping sec­tion one of four.

Re­yare Thomas faced the starter in the women's 100m and placed fifth in 11.75. Ear­li­er, she ad­vanced with the sec­ond-fastest qual­i­fy­ing time of 11.49.

Janiel Bellille com­pet­ed in the women's 400m and placed third over­all in 59.00 in heat one, the fastest of the four sec­tions.
