T&T jumpers Alisha St Louis and Kelsey Daniel and sprinter Jerod Elcock copped silver medals at various meets in the both the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) circuit over the weekend in the United States.
St Louis, a Eastern Michigan Univerity senior, placed second in the women's triple jump event at the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Snowdown Showdown at the Laker Turf Building in Allendale, Michigan. Her best jump measured 11.74 metres.
She also competed in the long jump event and finished fifth with a distance of 5.36m.
Daniel, a freshman at New Mexico Junior College, ended in second place in the men's long jump event at the New Mexico Classic at Alberquerque Convention Centre.
He left it for late but his huge effort in the sixth and final jump measured 7.59m to claim the silver. Daniel, the reiging Pan Am Junior long-jump silver medallist, also had marks of 7.03m in the first, 7.37m in the second, fouled the third and fourth attempts and registered a 6.96m in the penultimate round.
His New Mexico JC schoolmate, sophomore Timothy Frederick, won section five in the qualifying rounds of the men's 60m with a time of 6.97 seconds and placed ninth. In the 200m, Frederick was also ninth overall with 21.74 after crossing third in section four.
Elcock, a Butler Community College sophomore, competing at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at the Devaney Center Indoor Track in Lincoln, Nebraska, finished second in the men's 60m dash with 6.75, the same time he advanced with from the preliminaries. It was the the second fastest time among the qualifiers for the medal race.
His schoolmate sophomore Judah Taylor ended in seventh spot in the men's 400m timed final with 49.05.
Elcock and Taylor made up half of Butler's 4x400m team but they did not finish the relay event unlike Onal Mitchell's Northern Iowa, who rossed sixth with 3:19.41 in the timed final.
Mitchell, a sophomore, also faced the starter in the men's 400m and ended in 15th spot with 50.12.
T&T had several track athletes compete at the Charlie Thomas Invitational at the Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium, College Station.
Freshman Taedja Badal of the host team placed 15th in the women's 200m with a 24.41-clocking while Alabama sophomore Ayla Stanisclaus was 49th with 25.49. Stanisclaus also competed in the 60m dash but false-started in the preliminary round.
South Plains freshman Camille Lewis competed in three events but did not reach the podium in any. She lined up in the 800m and was 37th (2:23.47). Lewis was part of the South Plains quartet, who placed 10th in the distance medley relay (12:48.90) and 14th (3:51.33) in the 4x400m relay.
Her South Plains schoolmate, freshman Justin Guy, competed in the men's 60m hurdles and finished 12th with 8.10. The event was won by Barbados Shane Brathwaite, running unattached, with 7.77.
At the Meyo Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana, Iowa sophomore Ianna Roach placed 13th with 14.23m in the women's shot put.
At the New Mexico Classic at Alberquerque Convention Centre, West Texas A&M sophomore Jalen Purcell placed sixth in the men's 200m with 21.56.
On Saturday at the LSU Bayou Bengal Track and Field meet, Akanni Hislop (Tiger Olympians) placed 12th overall with 6.90 in the men's 60m. He won heat one in the preliminary round with 6.90 to move on with fourth-fastest time and then placed fifth with the same time in the next round to be 12th overall.
Gittens transfers to Texas "Longhorns"
T&T's Tyra Gittens, a Texas A&M All-American, has transferred to the University of Texas at Austin which, she announced on Twitter on Wednesday.
Gittens in a graphic of herself wearing a Longhorn uniform on Wednesday afternoon in a post which included text of two “hook ’em, Horns” hand signs and two words: “Enough said.”
Gittens won the pentathlon and high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships last season then won the heptathlon at the NCAA outdoor meet. She scored 50 points for the Aggies between the two meets. In a post last month on Instagram, Gittens thanked A&M for the “many opportunities” the school provided her.
Gittens represented T&T at the virus-delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan. She competed in the long jump event.
