Rufano Stewart was voted the "Sportsman of the Season" when the Combined Schools Awards Committee held its annual Awards Presentation of trophies, prizes, individual awards and incentives at the Bagatelle Community Centre on Sunday (October 12).
The Tranquillity Secondary School's cricketer received the Kieron Pollard Massive Trophy for his accomplishments in front of an excellent turnout, which included Pastors Shawn Fraser and Blake. When they spoke, it was clear that the ceremony would be exceptional.
Notable attendees included Nagil Sampath, secretary of the North Zone Cricket Council and former head of the Combined Schools Awards Committee, as well as Rudy Balwant, along with several principals, games masters, coaches, parents, friends, and well-wishers.
Pride of place went to St Anthony's College cricket unit, which was awarded the title of "Team of the Season". Rondel Ramlogan of Merry Boys reserved the "Cricketer of the Year" honour with the fabulous Dwayne Brave Challenge Trophy.
The other highlights were the Legends of Honour, who were all conferred with the Order of the Combined Schools and inducted into the Hall of Fame, including national track and field coach Kelvin Nancoo, who was one of two persons who received the prestigious awards. Susan Rogers, a former national hockey player under former national hockey coach Nancoo, was the other recipient.
All coaches were presented with inscribed "Mantle of Leadership" plaques.
The Standard Bearers and Guiding Lights, considered pinnacles of excellence, who are inspirations for the Schools, continue to prepare cricketers, headed by Captain Belgrave and the Cadets.
The feature speaker, former player Kyle Borneo, brought the house down when he spoke about discipline and freedom. He confessed that when he first saw the number of trophies that cricketers got, he decided that he would love to have some. He incidentally scored 167 runs, which was his best batting performance, in his career.
He conveyed another piece of advice which gave the young cricketers something to think about, saying: "You have to work hard to attain anything and don't give up in the process."
