Ru­fano Stew­art was vot­ed the "Sports­man of the Sea­son" when the Com­bined Schools Awards Com­mit­tee held its an­nu­al Awards Pre­sen­ta­tion of tro­phies, prizes, in­di­vid­ual awards and in­cen­tives at the Bagatelle Com­mu­ni­ty Cen­tre on Sun­day (Oc­to­ber 12).

The Tran­quil­li­ty Sec­ondary School's crick­eter re­ceived the Kieron Pol­lard Mas­sive Tro­phy for his ac­com­plish­ments in front of an ex­cel­lent turnout, which in­clud­ed Pas­tors Shawn Fras­er and Blake. When they spoke, it was clear that the cer­e­mo­ny would be ex­cep­tion­al.

No­table at­ten­dees in­clud­ed Nag­il Sam­path, sec­re­tary of the North Zone Crick­et Coun­cil and for­mer head of the Com­bined Schools Awards Com­mit­tee, as well as Rudy Bal­want, along with sev­er­al prin­ci­pals, games mas­ters, coach­es, par­ents, friends, and well-wish­ers.

Pride of place went to St An­tho­ny's Col­lege crick­et unit, which was award­ed the ti­tle of "Team of the Sea­son". Ron­del Ram­lo­gan of Mer­ry Boys re­served the "Crick­eter of the Year" ho­n­our with the fab­u­lous Dwayne Brave Chal­lenge Tro­phy.

The oth­er high­lights were the Leg­ends of Ho­n­our, who were all con­ferred with the Or­der of the Com­bined Schools and in­duct­ed in­to the Hall of Fame, in­clud­ing na­tion­al track and field coach Kelvin Nan­coo, who was one of two per­sons who re­ceived the pres­ti­gious awards. Su­san Rogers, a for­mer na­tion­al hock­ey play­er un­der for­mer na­tion­al hock­ey coach Nan­coo, was the oth­er re­cip­i­ent.

All coach­es were pre­sent­ed with in­scribed "Man­tle of Lead­er­ship" plaques.

The Stan­dard Bear­ers and Guid­ing Lights, con­sid­ered pin­na­cles of ex­cel­lence, who are in­spi­ra­tions for the Schools, con­tin­ue to pre­pare crick­eters, head­ed by Cap­tain Bel­grave and the Cadets.

The fea­ture speak­er, for­mer play­er Kyle Bor­neo, brought the house down when he spoke about dis­ci­pline and free­dom. He con­fessed that when he first saw the num­ber of tro­phies that crick­eters got, he de­cid­ed that he would love to have some. He in­ci­den­tal­ly scored 167 runs, which was his best bat­ting per­for­mance, in his ca­reer.

He con­veyed an­oth­er piece of ad­vice which gave the young crick­eters some­thing to think about, say­ing: "You have to work hard to at­tain any­thing and don't give up in the process."
