T&T’s Akeem Stewart captured the silver medal in the men’s discus F44 final at the 2025 World Para-Athletics Championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, India, Friday (October 3).
Stewart took the runner-up spot with a fifth round throw of 59.64 metres. The Scarborough Secondary graduate finished behind Colombian Andres Mosquera Neira, who secured gold with a distance of 60.26m. Dan Greaves of Great Britain finished in third position (52.42).
Stewart opened his medal bid with 59.12 in the first round of the competition to lie in second behind Neira’s 59.87. Walsh was in third (51.49). The Kaizen Panthers club-member fouled his second throw but remained in the second position, the Colombian, who improved to 60.26. Stewart went further to 59.19 on his third time in the circle but could not catch Neira who threw 59.50. Stewart recorded 55.97 in the fourth round as Neira dominated the field with a second 60m effort of 60.24. The 2016 Rio Paralympic Javelin F 44 champion responded in the fifth round, unleashing his best throw of 59.64 to remain in second spot. Stewart closed off his campaign with 55.96m. The Carnbee resident was hoping for discus gold to match his World Para titles in the Javelin and Shot put (F 44) in London, England in 2017. He bettered the bronze he gained in the discus event in Doha, Qatar, in 2015.
His World Para-Athletics Championships medal haul is now at five. He also won Paralympic silver in the Discus F44 in 2016 and silver in the Discus F64 at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.
He has also landed Para-Pan American Games titles (men’s iscus-F 44 in 2015, 2019, Discus F 64-2013) and one silver (Javelin F 64-2019).
Stewart is the world record holder in the men’s discus F 43 event with a distance of 63.70 in 2019. and also holds the national shot put record (20.99) established in 2022. He missed the 2023 World Para-Athletic Championships.
