Strategic planning establishes a clear direction for sporting organisations to operate in an ever-changing socio-economic climate. Strategic planning focuses on current operations and finding ways to improve and grow constantly.
A strategic plan should clearly state the organisations Mission, Vision, Goals and Objectives. Some of the fundamental benefits of strategic development planning are:
· It provides a direction for the club's/organisation's growth. Success is looking forward, and management must always be aware of factors that are affecting or will affect and be able to adapt and adjust.
· The administration and membership will be able to assess the club's progress and development. Through SWOT or PESTLE analysis, the organisation will be in a position to take corrective measures where it has fallen short of its goals and objectives. At the same time, it can reinforce areas deemed to be functioning efficiently. Additionally, a clearly stated strategic development plan reinforces the principles of transparency, accountability, and good governance.
· A basis upon which membership drives are strengthened to increase participation across different demographics such as age, ethnicity, gender, religion, geography, and social class.
· It will help management establish a path toward establishing strategic relationships with various stakeholders such as schools, community groups, national sports governing bodies, the Ministry of Sport and Community Development (MSCD), sponsors and media.
· It is a critical document for sponsors. Sponsors prefer to partner with well-organised organisations committed to good governance and efficiency.
In writing a strategic development plan, administrators must address three (3) essential questions:
1 Where is the club/organisation at the moment?
Management must conduct a situational analysis through a SWOT analysis, i.e., identify its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and potential threats.
2. Where would the club/organisation like to be in a particular time frame?
In answering this question, management has to consider several factors, such as building membership, improving overall performance not only in terms of the sport but also its overall management strategy and style, developing coaching and other critical support areas for the sport, and also addressing issues of facilities and equipment. The direction of the club/organisation is shaped by its vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
3 What is the road map to achieve where the club would like to be?
Management must establish an action plan based on the candid and accurate answers to the questions above. A transparent and accountable monitoring and evaluations (M&E) system is e crucial to establishing an action and implementation plan. The M&E system will let management and the club/organisation membership know if the goals and objectives are being met. The action plan must state:
· What has to be done and by whom
· Established SMART time frames
· The available necessary resources
· All cost items
A strategic development plan is not a silver bullet or panacea on its own; however, when combined with dynamic Avant Garde leadership, suitable human resource capacity, and cutting-edge technology, its potential toward achieving the goals and objectives of any sports club/organisation is enhanced tremendously.
