The John O'Brien trained four-year-old Super Bird was nothing short of impressive in registering his second victory for the current season in the feature Modified Benchmark Handicap event for Three-Year-old and Over Horses Rated 90-70 over 1,500 metres on the Turf Track at Santa Rosa Park, Arima on Sunday.
When last seen over the distance on the turf course two weeks ago, Super Bird accounted for the Lester Alexis trained six-year-old Cool Cat who won the Sian's Gold Sprint beating Super Bird in the process.
Punters made the 2020 'Triple Crown' winner Wise Guy at 4/5 and his stablemate Super Bird was sent off at the generous p[rice of 5/2. Cool Cat was the second favourite at odds of 9-5.
When the starter sent the five-horse field on their way Super Bird was the first to show from his outside post, he was tracked by Leonardo Angel with Cool Cat and Wise Guy tracking the pace and Desert Dancer contented to observe from the rear.
Going up the back-straight Brian Boodramsing aboard Super Bird controlled the pace and led by two lengths from Leonardo Angel with Wise Guy moving into third and relegating Cool Cat to a close fourth as Desert Dancer watch on from the rear.
However, approaching the far turn, the complexion of the race changed as the Odds-on favourite Wise Guy moved into second behind Super Bird but the move was covered by Kimal Santo aboard Cool Cat and he made his move to the leader Super Bird from three horses wide.
With 400 metres to race Super Bird still had a length lead on Cool Cat who was challenging as Leonardo Angel came under pressure as Desert Dancer began to close on Wise Guy.
With 300 metres to run, champion jockey Brian Boodramsing gave Super Bird the office and the Hugh Leong Poi owned four-year-old old quickened clear of Cool Cat as Desert Dancer moved into the third place, ahead of Wise Guy.
At the line, Super Bird had 2 1/2 lengths to spare Cool Cat with Desert Dancer in third.
Super Bird registered the time of 1:33.62 for the trip. he has now won his last two starts.
Earlier in the day, Pawan Putra landed his third win of the season under champion jockey Ricky Jadoo. Jadoo produced Pawan Putra in the final 300 metres for a good win and he looks the most improved horse in training. The Michael Lutchman trained thoroughbred beat some top sprinters in Patta Patta and Soca Symphony over 1200 metres in the time of 1:12.3.
The day's leading riders were were Brian Boodramsing and apprentice Tristan Phillips who both rode two winners apiece. Boodramsing was aboard Game Changer and Super Bird while Phillips partnered Atalanta and Schwarzenegger.
Racing takes a break for two weeks and will return on March 12th.
