The John O'Brien trained four-year-old Su­per Bird was noth­ing short of im­pres­sive in reg­is­ter­ing his sec­ond vic­to­ry for the cur­rent sea­son in the fea­ture Mod­i­fied Bench­mark Hand­i­cap event for Three-Year-old and Over Hors­es Rat­ed 90-70 over 1,500 me­tres on the Turf Track at San­ta Rosa Park, Ari­ma on Sun­day.

When last seen over the dis­tance on the turf course two weeks ago, Su­per Bird ac­count­ed for the Lester Alex­is trained six-year-old Cool Cat who won the Sian's Gold Sprint beat­ing Su­per Bird in the process.

Pun­ters made the 2020 'Triple Crown' win­ner Wise Guy at 4/5 and his sta­ble­mate Su­per Bird was sent off at the gen­er­ous p[rice of 5/2. Cool Cat was the sec­ond favourite at odds of 9-5.

When the starter sent the five-horse field on their way Su­per Bird was the first to show from his out­side post, he was tracked by Leonar­do An­gel with Cool Cat and Wise Guy track­ing the pace and Desert Dancer con­tent­ed to ob­serve from the rear.

Go­ing up the back-straight Bri­an Boodram­s­ing aboard Su­per Bird con­trolled the pace and led by two lengths from Leonar­do An­gel with Wise Guy mov­ing in­to third and rel­e­gat­ing Cool Cat to a close fourth as Desert Dancer watch on from the rear.

How­ev­er, ap­proach­ing the far turn, the com­plex­ion of the race changed as the Odds-on favourite Wise Guy moved in­to sec­ond be­hind Su­per Bird but the move was cov­ered by Ki­mal San­to aboard Cool Cat and he made his move to the leader Su­per Bird from three hors­es wide.

With 400 me­tres to race Su­per Bird still had a length lead on Cool Cat who was chal­leng­ing as Leonar­do An­gel came un­der pres­sure as Desert Dancer be­gan to close on Wise Guy.

With 300 me­tres to run, cham­pi­on jock­ey Bri­an Boodram­s­ing gave Su­per Bird the of­fice and the Hugh Leong Poi owned four-year-old old quick­ened clear of Cool Cat as Desert Dancer moved in­to the third place, ahead of Wise Guy.

At the line, Su­per Bird had 2 1/2 lengths to spare Cool Cat with Desert Dancer in third.

Su­per Bird reg­is­tered the time of 1:33.62 for the trip. he has now won his last two starts.

Ear­li­er in the day, Pawan Pu­tra land­ed his third win of the sea­son un­der cham­pi­on jock­ey Ricky Jadoo. Jadoo pro­duced Pawan Pu­tra in the fi­nal 300 me­tres for a good win and he looks the most im­proved horse in train­ing. The Michael Lutch­man trained thor­ough­bred beat some top sprint­ers in Pat­ta Pat­ta and So­ca Sym­pho­ny over 1200 me­tres in the time of 1:12.3.

The day's lead­ing rid­ers were were Bri­an Boodram­s­ing and ap­pren­tice Tris­tan Phillips who both rode two win­ners apiece. Boodram­s­ing was aboard Game Chang­er and Su­per Bird while Phillips part­nered Ata­lan­ta and Schwarzeneg­ger.

Rac­ing takes a break for two weeks and will re­turn on March 12th.
