For just US$5, boxing fans will get the opportunity via a live stream, to see an entertaining event featuring soca artistes Anthony La Fleur, who is known popularly as “Squeezy Rankin” and Marvin 'Swappi' Davis in action at a Sea Lots venue on February 26.
Swappi has not been taking this fight lightly and has been training with the T&T boxing team at a Petit Valley gym where he has been getting sparring sessions with this country's Super Heavyweight fighter Nigel Paul.
" So far, I am training with the T&T national boxing team for about two weeks now. This is my second week, I have been doing some sparring with Nigel Paul and a lot of their amateur fighters, getting some tips here and there to just sharpen up on my skills and build on my condition etc. I am going in 100 percent for this fight," Swappi said.
The opportunity that afforded Swappi to train with the national team is part of an open-door policy by the national team and its coaches Reynold Cox, Rawlson Dopwell, Ulric Johnson and new coach Yuri Sorzano to help people out if they are interested in boxing, Cox told Guardian Media Sports.
Cox admitted that with continued training Swappi will be a force to be reckoned with for his fight. He later said jokingly that Swappi, the man who rocked the nation with popular soca hits such as 'Bucket' in 2012, 'Jumbie Head' in 2020 and 'God is Ah Trini' in 2021 is not ruling out a serious go for a spot on the national team, saying: " You can never know what can happen, the sky is the limit and once you have the passion and the drive, everything is there to your disposal.
So it's up to me if I want to go forward and experiment on that and see what it's like."
Organisers of the event labelled 'Ease Your Frustration' were set to finalise the venue for the event. Apart from the main fight, there will be an undercard bout between entertainers Umi Marcano and Kerry John.
Swappi said the event will comprise light live entertainment that will take place before the bouts. However, he made it clear that organisers will be severely strict in adherence to the COVID-19 protocols.
" I am very strict with the protocols because we don't want to embarrass the boxing board which is interested in what is taking place, we don't want to look bad to the outside world by disrespecting the covid protocols," Swappi explained.
