National swimmers Jeron Thompson and Aqeel Joseph both won relay gold medals in helping the University of Indianapolis (UIndy) men's team to the title at the conclusion of the three-day Denison Invitational at the Trumbull Aquatics Center, Granville Ohio on Saturday.
The University of Indianapolis tallied 1,941 points for the top spot with Denison University second with 1,748 followed by Emory with 1,647, Washington University of St Louis with 1,488, and Emory and Henry College, fifth with 320.
Thompson led the University of Indianapolis 'A' to the gold medal in the men's 200-yard medley relay in a time of one minute, 25.60 seconds with Brayden Cole, Oskar Sawicki and Joao Silva the other members of the winning quartet with Emory University (1:25.95) in second, and the University of Indianapolis 'B' foursome of Mattia Rossi, Sebestyen Bohm, Joseph and Diego Mas, third in 1:26.91.
Thompson also swam the lead-off leg for the University of Indianapolis men's 400-yard medley relay quartet which also featured Brayden Cole, Elias Noe and Silva for a second-place finish in 3:12.72 while Emory University won in 3:11.04 and Emory 'B', the bronze in 3:15.01.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Bartosz Mielniczuk, Joseph, Oskar Sawicki and Silva combined for victory in two minutes, 56.02 seconds, well clear of Washington University of St Louis (2:59.45), and Emory University (2:59.96) while the quartet of Thompson, Mas, Austin Kehr, and Cedric Buessing of UIndy 'A' was disqualified.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Joseph swam to the silver medal in 44.51, to trail teammate Mielniczuk's 44.21 while another UIndy swimmer Silva was third in 44.42 and Thompson, sixth in 44.75.
Joseph was also ninth in the 100-yard butterfly 'A' final in 49.61 seconds after he clocked 48.72 in the heats while Thompson topped the 'B' final in 48.53 and in the 100-yard backstroke, Thompson finished in the eighth position as well in 50.09 after he was timed as 49.66 in the heats.
In the men's 50-yard freestyle A-final, Joseph was fourth home in 20.07 seconds in an NCAA B-cut time, to trail his trio of teammates, Silva (19.75), Sawicki (19.98), and Mas (20.05) while Thompson was seventh in 20.55.
Chatoor helps Emory to third spot
Among the women, T&T's Jada Chatoor and Emory were third with 1,493.5 points, to finish behind Denison University's 2090.5, and the University of Indianapolis, who tallied 1,508.
Chatoor, who touched the wall in the preliminary heats in five minutes, 03.26 seconds, was much faster in winning the B-final in four minutes, 59.39 seconds which bettered the NCAA 'B' cut time of five minutes, 00.37 seconds.
Second home was Dennison University's Annie Pfeufer who clocked 4:59.87, and Emory's Katie' Eaton's time of 5:02.34.
Chatoor also had an eighth-place finish in the women's 200-yard freestyle A-final in 1:53.18 before she ended the three days of competition with a fourth-place finish in the 1,600-yard freestyle in 16 minutes, 58.07 seconds, just shy of third place swimmer Taryn Wisner of Dennison University's time of 16:57.20.
