Trinidad and Tobago’s national men’s 3x3 basketball team exited the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup in El Salvador on Saturday night (October 31) following back-to-back group-stage defeats against continental powerhouses Canada and Mexico in Pool C.
Entering the main draw after a dramatic qualification round, T&T struggled to hold off Canada’s intense offence in their Pool C opener, surrendering to a 21-8 defeat with 1:45 remaining on the game clock. Jelani Micah Valley paced the national team with four points, supported by Tyrese Fields with three and Tyrik Zwade Singh with one, while Jason Josiah Friday was held scoreless.
Later, T&T returned to the court to face Mexico in their final group fixture. Despite a spirited early defensive effort, T&T fell 21-9 with 3:24 to play. Valley again led T&T’s scoring output with five points, Singh added three, and Friday chipped in one point.
Canada finished atop Pool C with an unbeaten 2-0 record to advance directly to yesterday’s knockout quarterfinals alongside runner-up Mexico (1-1). T&T’s 0-2 run in the group stage confirmed an overall tournament placement of 12th position—marking the second time the squad has reached the main draw without advancing to the knockout phase, following previous overall finishes of 13th (2021), fourth (2022), ninth (2024), and 10th (2025).
Despite the group-stage exit, T&T’s campaign was highlighted by remarkable resilience during Thursday’s Qualifying Draw C. After building a comfortable 7-2 lead against Saint Lucia in their opening qualifier, T&T suffered a severe blow when Friday sustained a direct elbow to the face, losing three teeth under the rim. Rushed off the court for emergency medical care, a short-handed T&T dropped the opener 17-14.
The remaining trio of Singh, Fields, and Valley regrouped to overwhelm the Cayman Islands 21-12 behind an 11-point performance from Singh. Friday made a return to the court for the final match against Honduras, sparking a 21-14 victory that forced a three-way tie at 2-1 with Honduras and Saint Lucia. T&T ultimately won the single Main Draw berth by virtue of total points scored, amassing 56 total points across qualification.
