Orielle Martin scored two goals to lead T&T ‘A’ to a comprehensive 4-0 defeat of St Vincent and the Grenadines for a perfect 3-0 record at the top of the four-team round-robin table in the Jewels of the Caribbean Under-17 Women’s Tournament at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, Mondday.
With both teams already assured of meeting in Wednesday’s final after winning their first two matches each, Martin and her teammates sounded a warning to their rivals in their dress rehearsal clash.
A student at Bishop Anstey East, Martin scored in the ninth minute from the penalty spot and added a fourth item in the 66th for her tournament-high fifth and sixth goals.
Madison Campbell also scored from the penalty spot in the 15th for the Richard Hood-coached winner, and Jasmine Mc Nish, the other in the first minute of time added on at the end of the first half of the 80-minute match.
With the win, the T&T ‘A’ girls finished with a maximum of nine points, three ahead of St Vincent and The Grenadines ahead of the title match at the same venue on Wednesday from 3 pm.
In Wednesday’s opening match from 1 pm, T&T ‘B’ and Grenada who both picked up their first points of the tournament in a goalless draw yesterday meet again for the third spot.
On Sunday night, T&T ‘A’ scolded T&T ‘B’ 6-0 with a goal each from five different players.
Kimora Mitchell got the ball rolling for the ‘A’ team with the go-ahead item as early as the second minute, while 2022 ‘Secondary School Girls Football League’ “Player of the Year’ J’Eleisha Alexander doubled the advantage two minutes before the half-time interval.
Three minutes into the second half, Cherine Steele made it 3-0 while Martin added her name to the score sheet in the 66th followed by one from Ty’Kaiya Dennis (69th), and another by Martin two minutes into time added at the end of the 80-minutes contest as the T&T ‘A’ girls strolled to their second win from as many matches after whipping Grenada 4-1 in their opener with Martin, and Alexander scoring two goals each.
St Vincent and The Grenadines also won their second straight match in Sunday’s opener, 2-1 against Grenada thanks to a late penalty from captain Meiya Wilson, five minutes into stoppage time.
Hailey Mc Intyre had given Grenada a 32nd minute only for Vinesha Wilson to reply for St Vincent and The Grenadines, a minute later, before Wilson’s late winner.
When the competition began on Saturday at Malabar, T&T U-17s ‘A’ unit outplayed Grenada, 4-1 with Alexander, and Martin netting two goals for the ‘A’ team while Mc Intyre got a consolation item for the Grenadians.
Earlier at the same venue in the tournament opener, the Afiya Matthias-coached T&T ‘B’ Young Stars team featuring Hakeemar Goodridge, Mikayla Guerero, Jayda Herbert, and Alexis-Raye Lalchan was edged by SVG in their 80-minute contest 1-0 courtesy of Wilson in the 28th minute.
