Jordan Mohammed’s impressive five-wicket haul and a strong batting performance from Riyaad Mohammed have put T&T in control against the Windward Islands in the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Under-17 Men’s Two-Day Championships at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Balmain, Couva, Wednesday. T&T leads by 38 runs with six wickets remaining at the close of play on day one.
The host team won the toss and elected to field first. With the Windward Islands facing the crease first, opening batsmen Khan Elcock (15) and Theo Edwards (42) started with a partnership of 30 runs before the former lost his wicket caught by Alvin Sonny off the bowling of Aadian Racha.
Earsinho Fontaine entered but his stay was short after he was bowled by Mohammed (J) for six. From there wickets continued to fall for the Windward Islands, but they were still able to conclude their first inning with a total score of 110 all out in 40.4 overs.
Top wicket-taker for the T&T team, Mohammed took five wickets for 40 runs in 11 overs and he was supported by Ishmael Ali, who got three wickets for 11 runs in 10.4 overs.
In the attack, T&T’s opening batsmen understood what needed to be done and executed perfectly. The openers held it down with a strong partnership of 108 from Luke Ali (47) and Riyaad Mohammed (51). Until Mohammed was bowled and followed right after by Ali, with both wickets taken by Kirt Murray. It gave T&T the lead by 38 wickets with six wickets remaining against the Windwards. Murray concluded with four wickets for 39 in 14 overs at the end of the first innings.
Over at the Inshan Ali Park in Preysal, Barbados leads by 85 runs with 10 wickets remaining against Guyana.
Batting first, the Barbadians ended on 172 all out in their first innings and are currently batting three without loss with a top score from Reviera Cottle of 53 runs from 57 deliveries. Guyanese bowler Matthew Pottaya took four wickets for 39 runs. Guyana was then bowled out for 90 in 29.2 overs, with Kevin Kisten scoring 33 from 43 deliveries. Barbados bowler Kyron King got five wickets for 27 at the end of the day.
At Gilbert Park, Jamaica leads by 25 runs with 10 wickets remaining against the Leeward Islands.
Leewards won the toss and decided to field first, which led to the Jamaicans ending their first innings on 93 all out and currently on 18 without loss in eight overs. Opener Kev’Aundre Virgo for Jamaica was topscorer with 21 runs from 72 deliveries. Leewards’ bowling attack came from Xaveek Toppin, who got three wickets for 13 runs. In the Leeward’s first innings, they ended on 86 all out in 33.1 overs. Xaveek Toppin top-scored with 51 before being run out. Jamaican bowler Ralique Thomas got four wickets for 18 runs in eight overs.
