T&T secure 4 more medals at Carifta50

T&T clinched four medals - three sil­ver and a bronze - on the sec­ond day at the 50th Carif­ta Games in Nas­sau, Ba­hamas on Sun­day.

This in­creased the team dressed in black, red and white tal­ly to 10 at press time, hav­ing en­tered day two with six medals (1 gold, 2 sil­vers and three bronze).

Af­ter a dis­ap­point­ing morn­ing ses­sion on day two with T&T pick­ing up no medals, Kaleb Camp­bell got things go­ing for the na­tion­al team, cop­ping a sil­ver medal in the boys' Un­der-17 high jump with a clear­ance of 1.87 me­tres.

This coun­try's oth­er medals came off the sprint re­lay teams - two sil­vers and a bronze.

First, the girls' U-17 4x100m quar­tet placed sec­ond with 46.18 sec­onds be­hind Ja­maica (45.36) and ahead of the Ba­hamas (46.43). Then, the Girls U-20 unit crossed sec­ond in 45.35 to fol­low Ja­maica (44.01) to the line. Ba­hamas bagged the bronze with a 45.55-tim­ing.

The boys' U-20 sprint re­lay team raced to bronze in 40.83. Ja­maica took gold in 39.68 and Ba­hamas, the bronze, with 39.78.

This af­ter a dis­ap­point­ing morn­ing ses­sion of day two for T&T as the team dressed in black, red and white picked up no medals.

Jinell Camp­bell was among the best fin­ish­ers for T&T on the sec­ond day of the pre­mier youth track and field meet in the re­gion. She placed fifth in the girls' Un­der-20 shot put event. The 19-year-old best throw mea­sured 12.83 me­tres. This was in the sixth and fi­nal round.

Javelin throw­er Keni­ka Cas­sar and long jumper An­drew Steele placed sev­enth in their re­spec­tive events at Carif­ta50.

Cas­sar's best throw mea­sured 41.20m in the girls' U-20 javelin while Steele leaped to a mark of 7.16m on his best try in the third round in the boys' U-20 long jump.

In the evening ses­sion, T&T's mid­dle-dis­tance run­ner Aniqah Bai­ley missed out on a medal in the girls' open 3,000m, plac­ing fourth with a time of 10:51.79 at Carif­ta50.

For­eign-based sprint­er Sanaa Fred­er­ick sped to a com­fort­able vic­to­ry in semi­fi­nal heat one to reach the fi­nal of the girls' U-20 200m dash. Fred­er­ick, the reign­ing 100m bronze medal­list, pro­gressed to the medal race as the fastest qual­i­fi­er with a 23.49 clock­ing.

T&T's oth­er sprint­er Janae De Gannes just missed out on the fi­nale af­ter her fifth-place fin­ish in heat two. She clocked 24.53 sec­onds.

Sprint­er Joshua Mas­call is al­so a fi­nal­ist in the boys' U-20 200m dash. This af­ter pro­gress­ing from the semi­fi­nals as an au­to­mat­ic qual­i­fi­er af­ter plac­ing third with 21.64.

In the semi­fi­nals, Mas­call, run­ning in lane five in heat one, clocked 21.70 to place sec­ond. Rev­ell Web­ster who was al­so sched­uled to com­pete in heat five did not start.

Alexxe Hen­ry, the reign­ing girls' U-17 100m bronze medal­list, and Kazi­ah Pe­ters did not ad­vance to the girls' 200m fi­nal.

Hen­ry placed fourth with 24.61 while Pe­ters end­ed in sixth spot with 25.28 in the sec­ond semi­fi­nal heat.

Natasha Fox and Keneisha Shel­bourne missed out on medals in the girls' U-20 400m hur­dles, fin­ish­ing fourth and fifth, re­spec­tive­ly.

Fox clocked 1:0029 and fin­ished ahead of her com­pa­tri­ot Shel­bourne, who got across the line in 1:04.12.

Kaori Rob­ley al­so got a chance to race for a medal in the girls' U-17 400m hur­dles. The 16-year-old, run­ning in lane sev­en, fin­ished fifth with 1:09.18.

Ste­fan Came­jo and Nathan Cum­ber­batch were au­to­mat­ic qual­i­fiers for the fi­nal of the boys' U-20 800m. Came­jo topped heat one with 1:53.64 and ad­vanced with the fastest qual­i­fy­ing time. Cum­ber­batch clocked 1:56.38 to progress with the third quick­est time among the fi­nal­ists. The fi­nal is sched­uled for to­day at 5.25 pm.

On Sat­ur­day, T&T closed with a gold from Im­mani Matthew in the boys' U-17 long jump, two sil­ver from Do­ri­an Charles in the boys' javelin and Pey­ton Win­ter in the girls' U-17 shot put and three bronze from Sanaa Fred­er­ick in the girls' U-20 100m, Jai­di James in the boys' U20 high jump and Hen­ry.
