T&T secures 2 silver medals in morning session

Do­ri­an Charles and Pey­ton Win­ter won T&T's first medals at the 50th Carif­ta Games in The Ba­hamas on Sat­ur­day morn­ing.

Charles copped sil­ver in the boys' Un­der-20 javelin event with a throw of 61.58 me­tres at the Thomas A Robin­son Sta­di­um in Nas­sau, dur­ing Sat­ur­day's morn­ing ses­sion of day one.

The 18-year-old throw­er fin­ished be­hind Ba­hami­an Kaden Cartwright, who sent the spear 64.07m, and ahead of Cameron Thomas of Grena­da with 60.12m. An­oth­er T&T throw­er, Le Bron James placed fourth in the event with his best throw reach­ing 58.70m.

Win­ter al­so won the sil­ver medal in the girls' U-17 shot put event. The 15-year-old tossed the ob­ject 13.66m to place sec­ond be­hind Ja­maican Dion­jah Shaw with 14.48m and ahead of Ba­hami­an Ter­rell Mc­Coy with 13.31m.

Across the field, Tenique Vin­cent just missed out on a podi­um fin­ish as she placed fourth in the girls' U-17 high jump. She switched her fo­cus to the com­pe­ti­tion in the Girls Open Hep­tathlon.

Jaden Clement and Makae­lan Woods did not ad­vance to the medal race in the men's U-17 400m event.

Clement placed third in semi­fi­nal heat one with a time of 50.87 while Woods fin­ished fourth in heat two with 51.86. The medal race is at 6 pm.

Nakiel De­noon will al­so race for gold in the fi­nal of the boys' U-20 400m.

He was the lone lo­cal ath­lete pro­gress­ing fol­low­ing his third-place fin­ish in heat three with 48.38, the sev­enth fastest time of the eight fi­nal­ists.

Oth­er quar­ter-mil­er Cyril Sum­n­er com­plet­ed the one-lap event in fourth spot in heat two with 49.11 but did not ad­vance to the fi­nal af­ter fin­ish­ing 13th over­all.

In the 400m U-20 girls' semi­fi­nals, nei­ther Sole Fred­er­ick nor Rashee­da Cave reached the medal race. Fred­er­ick was 12th over­all af­ter plac­ing fourth in heat one with a time of 57.33 while Cave was 15th af­ter cross­ing sixth in heat two with 1:00.37.

All eight T&T sprint­ers pro­gressed to the semi­fi­nal rounds in the 100m dash.

For­eign-based Sanaa Fred­er­ick was the quick­est qual­i­fi­er in the U-20 girls' heats, win­ning heat three with an 11.47 clock­ing.

Reneisha An­drews al­so pro­gressed as one of the fastest losers af­ter plac­ing third in heat two with 12.21.

In the boys' ver­sion of the race, both Jor­dan Noel and Rev­ell Web­ster al­so reached the next round.

Noel placed fifth in the open­ing heat with 10.84 to have the 11th fastest time while Web­ster was an au­to­mat­ic qual­i­fi­er af­ter plac­ing sec­ond with 10.88 in heat four. He had the 15th-fastest qual­i­fy­ing time.

T&T's Alexxe Hen­ry and Sym­pho­ny Patrick were au­to­mat­ic qual­i­fiers for the next round in the women's U-17 100m af­ter top­ping their re­spec­tive heats.

Hen­ry crossed first in heat one with a time of 12.09 sec­onds, ad­vanc­ing with the fourth fastest time over­all.

Patrick fol­lowed up with a win in heat two in 12.40 to progress with the 10th fastest time.

In the boys' race in the same age group, duo Kadeem Chi­napoo and Tre­vaughn Stew­art al­so booked their spots in the semi­fi­nals. Chi­napoo ad­vanced with the sev­enth fastest of 11.14 af­ter plac­ing third in pre­lim­i­nary heat three.

Stew­art pro­gressed from heat two af­ter fin­ish­ing sixth with 11.31.
