T&T’s Baptiste cops Second “Best Middle Blocker” award

T&T ju­nior women’s team vol­ley­baller, Natas­sia Bap­tiste was the lone bright spark for her team at the end of the sev­en-team Ju­nior Pan Amer­i­can Games Women’s Vol­ley­ball Qual­i­fi­ca­tion Tour­na­ment in Aguas­calientes, Mex­i­co on Sun­day.

This af­ter the 17-year-old Bap­tiste of La Cu­ra Sports Club play­er was vot­ed as the “Sec­ond Best Mid­dle Block­er” when the in­di­vid­ual awards were hand­ed out at the Olympic Gym­na­si­um of Aguas­calientes.

The Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic’s Sthe­fany González was named as the “First Best Block­er” award re­cip­i­ent.

Gon­za­lez team­mate and Out­side Hit­ter Made­line Guillen was elect­ed as the Most Valu­able Play­er of the tour­na­ment af­ter her team won a fifth straight ti­tle beat­ing the host 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 in the fi­nal.

Guillen was al­so grant­ed three oth­er awards, “Sec­ond Best Spik­er”, “Best Serv­er” and “Best Scor­er”.

From the sil­ver medal­ists Mex­i­co, Gre­cia Cas­tro was award­ed as “First Best Spik­er”, Jose­line Lan­deros as “Best Re­ceiv­er”, Karen Rivera as “Best Set­ter” and Mar­i­an Ovalle as “Best Op­po­site”.

Guatemalan Lau­ra Quiñonez was rec­og­nized as the “Best Libero” and “Best De­fend­er”.

T&T end­ed in the cel­lar-spot in the tour­na­ment af­ter be­ing beat­en in the sixth-placed play­off against fel­low pre­vi­ous­ly win­less team Guatemala 19-25, 17-25, 18-25 on Sat­ur­day.

The de­feat fol­lowed sim­i­lar out­comes against reign­ing tour­na­ment cham­pi­ons Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic 8-25, 5-25, 5-25 in their Pool A round-robin open­er on Wednes­day, Au­gust 11, and on Au­gust 12 ver­sus Caribbean Zon­al Vol­ley­ball As­so­ci­a­tion ri­vals Suri­name, 17-25, 18-25, 24-26, high­light­ed by 45 un­forced er­rors.

Puer­to Ri­co took the bronze medals af­ter beat­ing Suri­name 25-22, 25-22, 29-27 while the top four teams, all qual­i­fied to the end of year in­au­gur­al Ju­nior Pan Amer­i­can Games in Cali, Colom­bia.

And in the fifth place play­off, Cos­ta Ri­ca out­played Guatemala 25-14, 25-12, 25-15.
