T&T junior women’s team volleyballer, Natassia Baptiste was the lone bright spark for her team at the end of the seven-team Junior Pan American Games Women’s Volleyball Qualification Tournament in Aguascalientes, Mexico on Sunday.
This after the 17-year-old Baptiste of La Cura Sports Club player was voted as the “Second Best Middle Blocker” when the individual awards were handed out at the Olympic Gymnasium of Aguascalientes.
The Dominican Republic’s Sthefany González was named as the “First Best Blocker” award recipient.
Gonzalez teammate and Outside Hitter Madeline Guillen was elected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after her team won a fifth straight title beating the host 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 in the final.
Guillen was also granted three other awards, “Second Best Spiker”, “Best Server” and “Best Scorer”.
From the silver medalists Mexico, Grecia Castro was awarded as “First Best Spiker”, Joseline Landeros as “Best Receiver”, Karen Rivera as “Best Setter” and Marian Ovalle as “Best Opposite”.
Guatemalan Laura Quiñonez was recognized as the “Best Libero” and “Best Defender”.
T&T ended in the cellar-spot in the tournament after being beaten in the sixth-placed playoff against fellow previously winless team Guatemala 19-25, 17-25, 18-25 on Saturday.
The defeat followed similar outcomes against reigning tournament champions Dominican Republic 8-25, 5-25, 5-25 in their Pool A round-robin opener on Wednesday, August 11, and on August 12 versus Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association rivals Suriname, 17-25, 18-25, 24-26, highlighted by 45 unforced errors.
Puerto Rico took the bronze medals after beating Suriname 25-22, 25-22, 29-27 while the top four teams, all qualified to the end of year inaugural Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia.
And in the fifth place playoff, Costa Rica outplayed Guatemala 25-14, 25-12, 25-15.
